Hackers can trick users into accidentally downloading malware (malicious software) in many ways. This is often done by tricking a user into clicking a link or downloading an attachment, although it's not always the case. 

Hackers can use a variety of channels to do this, including:

- Phishing emails
- Malicious websites
- Infected software downloads
- Software vulnerabilities
- Social media messaging
- SMS messaging
- Malvertising (advertising channels that have been hacked)
- Infected USB drives

It's crucial to always treat any link or attachment as suspicious unless you have verified both the sender and the message. Additionally, regular software updates are essential to avoid vulnerabilities.

New threats exploiting Crowdstrike outage: As expected, cybercriminals are taking advantage of the recent #Crowdstrike outage to launch scams. These schemes often involve tricking users into downloading malware via fake websites posing as IT services offering fixes and updates. Hackers hiding malware within stickers/GIFs: Our team has uncovered hacker discussions on the dark web about using stickers and GIFs to infect devices with viruses, which could result in an attacker gaining access to a device or sensitive data. This process (image steganography) involves embedding malicious code within an image through small modifications. This makes it very difficult for both the human eye and anti-virus solutions to detect. Remember, treat any file, image, or hyperlink as suspicious unless you can verify the sender and the message.

Teen hacker arrested: A 17-year-old from the UK has been arrested in connection with a hacker group that targeted organisations worldwide, including MGM Resorts, in 2023. On July 24th, hacktivist USDoD claimed that he had leaked CrowdStrike's 'entire threat actor list'. This is a list of threat actors (cybercriminals) collated by CrowdStrike.

According to CrowdStrike, the data claimed to be leaked by hacktivist USDoD is already accessible to thousands of their customers via the Falcon platform. 

The post’s reference to ‘two big databases from an oil company and pharmacy industry’ remains unclear. While a database may be available for download on the dark web post, it isn't as significant as it initially seemed.

It's not uncommon for hacker groups to exaggerate hacks to help boost their credibility in the cybercrime world.

Warnings have been issued about a new phishing campaign that tricks recipients into downloading infostealer malware. The phishing email pretends to provide instructions for a new recovery tool that supposedly fixes Windows devices recently impacted by the CrowdStrike outage. We have attached a screenshot of the message that is circulating in these emails.

Once downloaded, infostealer malware can log data from a user's browser, including credentials, browser history, and cookies (which can be used to bypass two-step verification). Infostealer logs are often used for further attacks, or they are shared or traded on the dark web.

It's important to remember not to follow any advice unless it's fully verified. If you are unsure about the legitimacy of a message, it's always best to reach out to a business's official customer service team to verify the information.

💻 Kaspersky Ceases Operations in the USA: Kaspersky, a leading anti-virus software provider, will soon cease operations in the USA. Starting September 29th, existing customers will no longer receive automatic updates and must manually update to avoid security risks. 🔒 LockBit Hacker Group Activity: Despite being dismantled earlier this year, the hacker group LockBit remains active. They've launched a 'VIP' group offering paid members access to private data, including information from companies that have not paid ransoms.
