What if you could detect lung cancer early through a blood test?

At Freenome, we’ve set out to realize this possibility with our just-initiated PROACT LUNG study. Our goal is to validate the clinical efficacy of our blood test for the early detection of lung cancer.

We will enroll as many as 20,000 current and former smokers over age 50 by collaborating with up to 100 sites across the U.S. This approach aims for geographic and demographic inclusivity, aligning with our commitment to accessible early cancer detection for all. 

Why is this significant? 

Because early detection saves lives. Currently, lung cancer screening rates are low - less than 6% of those eligible were screened based on a 2022 report from the American Lung Association. Our blood test may offer a promising, convenient addition to current screening methods that may encourage more of those eligible to be screened.

Through PROACT LUNG, Freenome is building toward a future where early detection is the norm, not a what-if.

Today, we announce the closure of a $254 million funding round led by Roche alongside existing and new investors. Their strategic investment will accelerate our efforts to advance early cancer detection.

This funding demonstrates our collective commitment to transforming cancer care by helping make early cancer detection "more convenient, accessible and actionable for everyone," in the words of our CEO Mike Nolan.

Detecting cancer too late is contributing to its high mortality rate. This is epitomized by colorectal cancer, which is highly treatable if caught early. At Freenome, we are determined to change this dynamic by integrating computational biology, machine learning, and other technologies to detect cancer early—when it is most treatable.

According to the American Lung Association, while tobacco use remains the leading risk factor for lung cancer, secondhand smoke, radon, and air pollution also significantly contribute to lung cancer cases.

The American Lung Association highlights that only 4.5% of high-risk individuals nationally are screened for #LungCancer, with significant variations between states. Massachusetts leads with a rate of 11.9%, while California lags at 0.7%. 

This data demonstrates the need for widespread, effective screening, especially in underserved states. Freenome’s focus is on bridging these screening gaps through innovative, non-invasive testing methods.

Individuals aged 50-80 years with a history of 20 or more pack-years of smoking are now considered high risk for lung cancer, as per the updated USPSTF guidelines. This broadened criterion has significantly increased the number of people eligible for screening, especially among women and Black Americans.

At Freenome, we recently initiated our PROACT LUNG clinical study for the early detection of lung cancer using a blood test developed on our multiomics platform. With this, we aim to complement current screening and prevention efforts. Our blood tests may help detect lung cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages.

Although there's no straightforward remedy for curing cancer, one fact stands clear: early detection significantly improves our chances of defeating it. 

In the case of colorectal cancer, for instance, early diagnosis leads to a 90% survival rate. While effective screening methods like colonoscopies for colorectal cancer and mammograms for breast cancer are available and proven to save lives, the persistently high cancer mortality rates indicate that not everyone receives timely screenings.
