More than 391,000 children and youth are currently in the U.S. foster care system, and a safe, stable home is critical to their wellbeing. The need is even greater for Black children in U.S. foster care, where Black youth make up 22%, even though they represent just 14% of American children. Black children are also less likely to find a permanent home through adoption than children of other racial backgrounds. In a time where foster parents are so desperately needed, it’s imperative that more caregivers become involved. Unfortunately, 63% of U.S. adults know little or nothing about the foster care system. Those who know nothing about foster care are less likely to feel positively toward it, compared to those who say they know a lot about the foster care system (15% vs. 54%).

Gallup Center on Black Voices collaborated with Kidsave, an organization that helps find adoptive families and mentors for older children, as part of their EMBRACE (Expanding Meaningful Black Relationships and Creating Equity) Project. Through this collaboration with Kidsave’s EMBRACE Project, the study’s goal was to better understand how the American public — especially Black Americans — view the foster care system and adoption from foster care, as well as identify barriers to mentoring, fostering and adopting. This study is based on a nationwide sample of 5,469 Americans — with an oversample of 1,563 Black Americans — who shared their perceptions, knowledge, experiences, and opinions related to foster care and adoption. The data are weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population as a whole.

Many corporate leaders are talking about the importance of “voice of employee” in decision-making. But what does that really mean? And how can leaders get it right?

Globally only one in four employees strongly agree their opinions count at work. This means that most employees do not feel their suggestions or ideas are listened to.

Involving as many employees as possible to offer input on key decisions is a proven way to generate buy-in and ownership of change and outcomes. Setting up internal “listening posts” can alert leaders to their potential blind spots in their own thinking by bringing in new perspectives, concerns and ideas. And yet, many well-meaning efforts to listen to employees are likely to fail if leaders skip the strategy part of their listening strategy.

In 2023, the retail industry experienced the largest decline in positive ratings among 25 business sectors. Thirty-six percent of Americans view the retail industry positively – a record low – while 28% view it negatively – a record high. Clearly, the public’s trust in retail management has been broken. 

And yet during the holiday season, shopping in person remains a ritual that many shoppers look forward to. According to a recent Shopify-Gallup poll, 59% of holiday shoppers plan to do their shopping in November or December. As  the calendar approaches the holiday season, a clean and organized store, a festive atmosphere, and helpful associates play a role in customers' decisions. But what else can retail companies and store managers do to restore trust and confidence with their customers during the holidays -- and over the long term?

Employees who can do their work remotely have an eroding connection to their organization’s mission or purpose. The drop is more pronounced recently for exclusively remote employees: 28% strongly agree they feel connected to their organization’s mission and purpose, tying the record low for this group from 2011.

This does not mean that remote work cannot work — but it requires exceptional managers. Managers must clearly communicate the organization’s mission and purpose while tying them to each team member’s daily work. We all know the benefits of hybrid work. But now that so many remote-capable employees have experienced the remote-work lifestyle, how can leaders make coming into the office worth it?⁠

It begins with ensuring people come to the office with intentionality — to collaborate with their coworkers, develop as professionals, stay close to their customers, discuss progress with their manager and build relationships. They need to see and feel their workplace culture come to life when they step in the door.⁠

This starts with designing a hybrid policy, team schedules and office spaces that inspire better collaboration and a strong sense of culture. Leaders need to prioritize their business needs and team feedback on a regular basis to ensure both are sufficiently addressed. ⁠

The “voice of employee” is a powerful concept that can transform the way leaders make decisions and have a positive impact on their organization. But it’s not a simple solution that can solve all problems. Leaders need to be strategic, intentional and accountable when they seek out and act on employee input. Otherwise, they risk wasting time, money and trust. In a time when only one in four employees strongly agree their opinions count at work, it’s imperative that leaders have tools and strategies to ensure the voices of employees are heard. 

Here’s what we recommend from our hands-on experience working with leaders: 
1.	Before you set up a listening post, think through the implications of having one.
2.	Start with the data you already have.
3.	Take action on and communicate survey results.
4.	Beware of survey fatigue and treat your questions like gold.
5.	Don’t use surveys to replace conversations.
