95 PERCENT OF AMERICAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS DRILL STUDENTS ON LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES IN THE EVENT OF A SHOOTING In the 2005–06 school year, 40 percent of American public schools drilled students on lockdown procedures in the event of a shooting; by the 2015–16 school year, 95 percent did. ✅ 31 percent There were at least 144 incidents of gunfire on school grounds in the 2023-2024 school year, a 31 percent increase from the prior school year. ✅ 2/3 Two in three incidents of gunfire on school grounds from 2013 to 2021 occurred in schools where one or more racial and/or ethnic minorities constituted a majority of the student population. ✅ Conclusion - Policymakers can help prevent gun violence in schools by implementing proactive, evidence-based interventions. - Planning and security strategies, as a last line of defense, can ensure that a school is prepared to quickly respond appropriately to any threat. - Our leaders must take responsible action to keep our schools safe. Facts School Shootings in the US so far in 2024 CNN – September 19th - There have been at least 50 school shootings in the United States so far this year, as of September 19. Thirteen were on college campuses, and 37 were on K-12 school grounds. - The incidents left 24 people dead and at least 66 other victims injured, according to CNN’s analysis of events reported by the Gun Violence Archive, Education Week and Everytown for Gun Safety. - In the first year of the pandemic, when schools were closed, there was a major decline in gun violence incidents on school grounds. Since then, recent years saw a stark increase in school shootings, with 2021, 2022 and 2023 all setting records since at least 2008. - There were at least 82 incidents in 2023, but 2022 was one of the deadliest years, with 46 fatalities, according to CNN’s analysis.
