Navier USN Autonomous Ship World Champions!

The Njord Challenge 2024 took place at Havet Arena in Trondheim, gathering seven teams and their Autonomous Surface Vehicles for an international competition. 

Navier USN from Universitetet i Sørøst-Norge emerged as this year’s champions, securing the title of World Champions in Autonomous Ships. After two weeks of intense focus—refining systems, coding, and teamwork—Navier USN celebrated their hard-earned victory. 

The team transitioned from a catamaran to a trimaran, implementing new software, hardware, organizational improvements, and a refined social media strategy. 

KONGSBERG, a proud sponsor of both Njord Challenge participants, Navier USN and Vortex NTNU, congratulates both teams on their outstanding contributions and celebrates Navier USN's success in the challenge.

They are the best in the country. But compete in sports with very little money. Yet, the Norwegian athletes manage to compete at the top level.

One hundred thirty athletes in ten sports have participated in Summit2024, an initiative aimed at the Paris Olympics.

Summit2024 is called a national effort for summer sports. These are the ten sports included in the project.

They receive support from companies and private individuals, and the money is distributed among the various sports in a shared pool.

Modern naval vessels must be able to quickly deploy and retrieve an array of marine robots, such as AUVs, underwater ROVs, and USVs, as well as handle manned craft and cargo. 


Navies are rapidly adjusting to a new way of sea warfare in which marine robots such as unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) will play vital roles.

Some navies are even experimenting with dedicated brigades that focus on marine robotics. 

Navies want platforms that can easily be transformed to meet the mission requirements; so, the days of ships that are dedicated to a small range of tasks are over.

Could drones be spies seeking information? Or could they be attempts by hostile nations to create confusion and fear?

Drones are often used by actors with less innocent intentions than curious tourists. Nearly all commercial drones are equipped with cameras capable of recording high-quality videos. 

Since the pilot can fly relatively unnoticed near buildings and installations, drones are well-suited for mapping and gathering information.

This could include entrances to buildings, security systems, or vulnerable points, such as those related to electricity or fuel supplies.

The availability of such drones means we have good reason to secure critical infrastructure here in Norway.

Critical infrastructure at sea is vulnerable, but we can protect it 🛡 

Critical infrastructure at sea supports international communication, keeps the power on and props up economies. Threats to that infrastructure are increasingly common and becoming more and more sophisticated.

Protecting our infrastructure requires cross-border collaboration and a system that can surveil a huge area, correctly identify threats and has clear guidelines for threat response. We must be a step ahead by leveraging technology and creating a system that is robust, cross-sector and coordinated.

We are uniquely placed to deliver integrated technologies that protect every aspect of critical infrastructure at sea.

Our next warrior is Grace Bullen! She will represent Norway in wrestling at the Paris 2024 Olympics. 

However, her journey to this point was far from certain. When she was close to giving up, an Instagram message changed everything. Since 2022, she has been living in Georgia, focusing on training with World and European Champion Zurabi Iakobishvili. 

On her third attempt, she finally managed to qualify for the Olympics, and KONGSBERG is honored to support her on this journey. 

Let's cheer for Grace as she battles her way to an Olympic medal on August 9!

Athletes in niche sports often face significant financial challenges, living on the brink of what is economically feasible to succeed in the lead-up to the Olympics.
