That year, Michael Smolyansky, a refugee from the former USSR, began manufacturing kefir in his basement to bring the taste of his homeland to the U.S. After Michael passed away in 2002, his daughter Julie Smolyansky assumed the role of President and CEO.

Julie’s lawyer tried to steal her company. But she slapped back. And last year she made $160M. I’m talking about Julie Smolyansky, President of Lifeway Foods. Her dad Michael founded the business when she was a kid. And when things got nasty, she stepped up to save it. Here's what happened. → In 1986, Michael whips up a cup of kefir. It’s a bubbly milk drink that’s good for your gut. → He turns that kefir into a big business. Within a decade, he’s selling 2M bottles a year. → Julie joins the company in 1997. Learning every inch of it. Her dad's training her to run the place. → Things are going great. And then suddenly, something terrible happens. Michael dies. The company's in chaos. And things are about to get dirty. ___ Julie is the clear candidate to take over Lifeway Foods. Everyone knows that. But the company's lawyer doesn't care. He wants the job for himself. So he stabs Julie in the back. Rallying the other shareholders to make him CEO. It's working. But Julie's not gonna stand for it. She calls a new lawyer to helps her out. And puts the pieces in place to win back control. There's a tense board meeting. Each person casts their votes. And they want Julie. She becomes the youngest CEO of a public company ever. The company also offers European-style soft cheeses; cream and other products; ProBugs, a line of kefir products designed for children; cupped kefir and Icelandic Skyr, a line of strained kefir and yogurt products; and frozen kefir in soft serve and pint-size containers. It sells its products under the Lifeway and Fresh Made brand names, as well as under private labels on behalf of customers primarily through direct sales force, brokers, and distributors. The company was founded in 1986 and is based in Morton Grove, Illinois.
