That year, Michael Smolyansky, a refugee from the former USSR, began manufacturing kefir in his basement to bring the taste of his homeland to the U.S. After Michael passed away in 2002, his daughter Julie Smolyansky assumed the role of President and CEO.

Her dad Michael founded the business when she was a kid. And when things got nasty, she stepped up to save it. Here's what happened. → In 1986, Michael whips up a cup of kefir. It’s a bubbly milk drink that’s good for your gut. → He turns that kefir into a big business. Within a decade, he’s selling 2M bottles a year. → Julie joins the company in 1997. Learning every inch of it. Her dad's training her to run the place. → Things are going great. And then suddenly, something terrible happens. Michael dies. The company's in chaos.
