2023 was the first full year free of major disruptions, so naturally, Navan dug into its extensive travel data to learn how travel & expense behavior has shifted — what's returned to historical norms, what's permanently changed, and what that means for 2024.

Here’s what’s ‘In’ and what’s ‘Out’ for the new year:

In: Traveling for work
Global business travel bookings grew ~50% YoY in 2023 — and forward bookings for 2024 are up 60% YoY

In: Adding personal travel to a work trip
Blended/bleisure travel bookings jumped 76% YoY. The most popular destinations? New York, San Francisco, London, Las Vegas, Paris, Sydney, Dublin, Singapore, and Barcelona.

In: Working remotely on vacay
Prior to the pandemic, the plurality of leisure bookings (25%) departed on a Friday, as workers were tied to an office. But with the rise of remote/hybrid work, the most popular departure days have become more distributed, with Friday departures down 4 percentage points from 2019, at 21%. Meanwhile, Mon–Wed departures have increased.

In: Not spending money out-of-pocket
Navan Expense saw processed spend grow nearly 2x YoY.

In: Experiential conferences; Out: Stuffy and transactional conferences
One area of spend that saw a big change in 2023 was conference transaction volume, which increased 216% YoY on Navan Expense. 

The average transaction amount, however, decreased by 22% YoY on avg., which could indicate declining prices or the implementation of stricter policies around conference spend — without a limitation on attendance.

In: Grabbing a coffee (let’s be real — it’s always in)
In 2023, Starbucks remained the top fast-food choice for road warriors, while Dunkin’ Donuts and Chick-fil-A saw steady increases in popularity this year.
