Climate change is the world's number one risk, with its most severe impacts to be felt over the coming decade, according to the World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report 2022.
 
Six of the 10 biggest risks over the next decade are posed by the environment, including failure to mitigate against and adapt to climate change, biodiversity loss, extreme weather, and natural resource crises. 
 
And the ocean has, finally, emerged as a key site of action against climate change. Right now, 83% of the world's carbon is circulating
through the ocean, with mangrove forests, seagrasses and tidal marshes acting as vast carbon sinks.
 
But these rich ecosystems are being lost at a rate of 1-2% per year, turning sinks into sources. At COP15 in December 2022, the Global Biodiversity Framework was agreed upon seeking to conserve 30% of the world's lands, inland waters, oceans, and coastlines by 2030 #30x30. 
 
Could blue carbon credits be part of the solution?

Although Ocean 14 Capital focuses on Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water, given that oceans cover 71% of the planet’s surface; are the source of protein for more than three billion people globally; and provide 350 million jobs in fishing, shipping, energy and coastal tourism, its impact flows across all the SDGs as this great infographic by Economist Impact and World Ocean Initiative shows. 

As we have seen with the now weakening Gulf Stream system, oceans act as a climate regulator by redistributing heat, touching SDG 13: Climate Action, and by producing goods and services worth over $2.5 trillion per annum the #blueeconomy is an essential part of SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth but only if it is harvested sustainably and regeneratively.
