Last Friday, teams from the UK and Spain joined together to celebrate Open Cosmos’ 8th birthday.

Despite the rather wet conditions, the day was great fun - featuring an indoor BBQ, Lego satellite model building and plenty of cake and fizz to toast the occasion 🎂 🥂 🛰

Last week, Open Cosmos had the privilege of hosting Josef Aschbacher and Simonetta Cheli at our Harwell Science and Innovation Campus Campus facilities to see the latest developments in a number of European Space Agency - ESA projects.
 
👉 MANTIS, the first satellite under ESA InCubed program, will provide high-quality Earth Observation data for the natural resources sector using multispectral imaging and AI insights onboard

👉 Phisat2 combines multispectral imaging with reprogrammable capabilities, revolutionising our understanding of Earth's ecosystems. 

👉 NanoMagSat, an ambitious research mission and part of the ESA SCOUT, is designed to monitor the Earth's magnetic field and ionospheric environment, advancing space weather knowledge. 

Open Cosmos celebrates its 8th birthday this month and is grateful for the partnership with ESA, which has enabled us to work on these cutting-edge missions.

Menut has been a success story from start to finish - a textbook launch, first clear image less than one month later and a perfectly executed LEOP. Over the past six months, the team at Open Cosmos has been working hard to ensure data and insights from the satellite can be used by the customer to better understand the impacts of climate change in Catalonia.

As the satellite now enters routine operations, we will be sharing these images through our multi-satellite data platform, DataCosmos.

Great to work with Generalitat de Catalunya, Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya - IEEC and ICGCat ICGCat to get Menut into orbit and helping to address global challenges.

Open Cosmos was honoured to receive a visit from Josef Aschbacher, Director General of the European Space Agency - ESA, alongside Simonetta Cheli, Director of ESA Earth Observation programmes at our facilities on the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus this morning.

During the visit, we were able to showcase three satellites scheduled for launch in the coming months, including MANTIS, ALISIO-1 and Phisat-2.

Our success and growth over the past eight years has been, in part, because of the strong partnership we have forged with ESA, and today was a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate how our satellites are combining earth observation with artificial intelligence.

We recently hosted our customer IACTEC Space at our facilities on the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus to perform the integration of their payload, the DRAGO-2 SWIR space camera, into the ALISIO-1 satellite.

ALISIO-1, which stands for Advanced Land-Imaging Satellite for Infrared Observations, is a 6U satellite which will also incorporate a CubeLCT laser communications terminal as a secondary payload.

Among others, the ALISIO-1 satellite will provide information for:

👉 Monitoring of the state of vegetation/crops
👉 Support in firefighting and volcanic activity (detection of hot spots and line of fire)
👉 The evaluation of flooded areas
👉 The monitoring of spills in known areas (e.g. oil platforms)
👉 The monitoring of urban development


ALISIO-1 will also be a pioneer in the establishment of optical Space-Earth communications, implementing optical communication systems that enable the transmission of data, signals, or information using light. This represents a significant advancement compared to traditional radio frequency-based communication methods.
