“Coming from a business-backed family, being a Chartered Accountant (CA) was predetermined. My father taught me that at the end of the day, it’s always about where your knowledge and education take you. It made me want to learn whatever I could, however I could.

During my internships – I worked with small and mid-firms before I began my journey with an MNC. That was my entryway into the big corporate world and my fascination with business. As a CA, you understand the profit-making side of things, but this was my chance to associate with corporates who make an impact on society and people at large; not to mention the exposure to larger numbers and diversity in leadership that helped my professional journey.

During COVID, I was looking for a new challenge. I wanted to explore terrains that I hadn’t thought about before. So, when the opportunity with Purplle arose, I jumped at it. It was a different adrenaline rush to scale something to the next level.

I joined Purplle at a very crucial moment of fundraising and process stabilization. Everything had to be looked at from a fresh perspective and accordingly reflected within policies and practices. The new challenge was building sustainable processes for a company that was growing at a 10x rate. It made my learning curve much steeper, with learning things that would have taken 2 years, taking 6 months.

As a team, our focus has been on implementing strategies geared towards long-term solutions. While it’s important to establish measures to streamline operations in the short term, enduring growth is rooted in comprehensive, forward-thinking plans. At Purplle, we devised a resilient financial process akin to those of multinational corporations. This not only enhanced our value proposition but also fortified our resilience to potential risks. A robust finance team can effectively anticipate future business needs and proactively manage risks, thereby facilitating strategic planning
and business sustainability.

At Purplle, we went from marketplaces to offline retail and stores; this growth comes with its own challenges and pressure, and I am glad for the opportunity to navigate through it as a leader. My mentors led by example – ensuring one passes on learnings and not pressure the team. How the team manages their time is your responsibility. If a task remains undone, you need to question the external factors going wrong before looking for something wrong with the person.

In my decade of experience, I’ve learned that if you plan for the long term the future will stabilize.”

Meet Suvarna from the Purplle Warehouse. 

"I was always too scared to step out of the house. Being a housewife, I never thought I’d ever have a job of my own. With the kids grown up and off to college,  it was getting difficult to make ends meet, and the thought of having something of my own never even occurred to me. 

I’d see women going to their jobs, but I was always too scared. I wondered if this was something I could do, but I was hesitant. I didn’t even know what a company was. After my eldest daughter finished her education, she told me to go for it and do a job and have something of my own. Today, It makes them so proud to see me working. 

I joined Purplle 7 years ago. It was tough initially, but I sailed through with the two other women who had joined then. I know that anytime I have a problem or make a mistake, I can go to anyone at Purplle, and they would help. With their backing and my determination, I discovered a new found confidence that helped me waltz through my difficulties.  

It’s a different feeling to be able to have your own money. Earlier, I’d always hesitate to ask my husband. The first thing I bought with my salary was a small idol of Ganesh Ji. Today, I have a house I purchased with my own money, which feels so comforting to go back to. 

That’s what my daughters have made me realize, ‘Bhale chhota hee sahi, kuch apna hona bohot zaruri hai’.”
