Supabase has introduced Index Advisor, a Postgres extension that recommends indexes to improve query performance. This tool allows developers to let the engine create indexes by examining queries, supporting generic parameters, materialized views, and identifying tables/columns obfuscated by views.

We decided to put Postgres vector performance to the test and run a direct comparison between pgvector and Pinecone on both cost and performance.

Utilizing the ANN Benchmarks methodology, a standard for benchmarking vector databases, we conducted tests against Pinecone's 3 Pod types for indexes:

- s1 pod type
- p1 pod type
- p2 pod type

it's not easy to figure out accuracy using Pinecone so we have detailed our methodology in the blog post. We store 1 million embeddings in each service, spending roughly the same on each. The end result is that Supabase is ~4x faster for $70 cheaper (we ran a slightly cheaper instance on Supabase to give the benefit of the doubt)

Supabase supports PostGIS extension, which enables us to store and query geographic data.

In this video, we will look at how we can store the latitude and longitude location data using a geographic point column, how to set an index on the column, how to query locations inside a bounding box, and how to sort the result from closest to farthest.
