We celebrate Black History Month annually in February as a way to honor important contributions made by African Americans in the past and learn from their achievements. This month’s Black History Month theme is African Americans in the Arts, and each week, we’re highlighting visionaries who had an impact in music, art, literature, the culinary arts, film and architecture.

Augusta Savage: A sculptor and educator during the Harlem Renaissance. Savage surmounted racial and gender prejudices to become an artistic force. Her dedication extended beyond her creations and she empowered future generations of artists.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: An influential artist who rose to success during the 1980's as part of the Neo-expressionism movement. His artwork played a significant role in elevating graffiti artists in the New York art scene. Basquiat used social commentary in his paintings as a tool for introspection, to identify with his experiences in the Black community.

Scott Joplin: Joplin, known as "the King of Ragtime," perfected the musical art form and composed many famous songs and operas. He is considered one of the greatest composers of the early 20th century.

Florence Beatrice Price: Price was the first Black female composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra. She injected new musical influence into classical concert music by adapting the melody of spirituals.
