Making an end-of-year donation? Don't get stung by a charity scam! This time of year, fraudsters often attempt to intercept charitable transactions by impersonating a person in need or an organization offering help. Nonprofit organizations and charities are common targets. Here's what to do to remain on the lookout for these types of scams:

-Verify the organization you are donating to by using resources like www.charitynavigator.org (Charity Navigator) www.give.org (BBB Wise Giving Alliance).

-Double check for misspellings in web addresses, names and other information appearing on a web page. For example, look for the .org extension on a website instead of a .com extension.
 
-Use third-party payment services like PayPal or a credit card to complete transactions. That way, it will be easier to stop, reverse or track your transaction if fraud is suspected.

-Avoid donating on sites like GoFundMe, where anyone can set up a fundraising request without clear, verified identification.

Online purchase scams are on the rise! Have you seen a deal that seems too good to be true? That just might be the case. Some scammers will attempt to steal your money directly by posting fake websites that ask for your credit card or other payment or personal information. To avoid online purchase scams, verify the seller by checking the review on a product or by seeing if you can find the same deal multiple ways (such as a Google search in addition to that Facebook ad). You can also use the Better Business Bureau's online scam tracker at www.bbb.org/scamtracker to verify a website's link, sales and return policy before you make a purchase.

Robert Harvie has joined Washington Trust Bank's Commercial Banking team in Bellevue! With over 20 years of financial industry experience, Robert “Harv” Harvie will serve as Senior Vice President and Commercial Banking Team Leader. In this role, Harv will lead our team of relationship managers and build upon our ability to serve as a financial partner for commercial clients. 

With his commercial banking leadership and experience, the addition of Harv to the team will allow Washington Trust to continue its organic growth and expansion in the east Puget Sound region.

Having spent most of his career in western Washington, Harv has close ties to the area and a passion for building relationships with clients to help them achieve their goals. Outside the office, he enjoys giving back to the community and serves as a board member for Boys & Girls Clubs of Bellevue.

Harv graduated from Western Washington University in Bellingham, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with an emphasis in management.

While the holiday season is one of joy and giving, it's important to remember that fraudsters never take a day off. Modern-day grinches are out there, and they'll do their best to steal your season's greetings.

As a proactive financial partner for the Northwest, Washington Trust Bank’s holiday wish is to keep you and your money safe from criminals. We'll be highlighting some of the most common scams we see this time of year and sharing tips for how to avoid them, beginning with package delivery scams.

In addition to those pesky porch pirates – the ones who'll swipe a box right in front of your door – cybercriminals may attempt to impersonate Santa by sending fake package delivery emails, redirection requests, tracking links and more. They're really after your personal information and will ask you to verify details such as your name and address. 

Suspicious links can direct you to phishing sites or even install malware on your computer. According to the Federal Trade Commission, package delivery scams were one of the top-reported text scams in 2022. 

Here are a few tips for avoiding package delivery scams this year:

1. Verify the Sender – Make sure the email, phone number, text, or website you are being directed to is legitimate. Double check links against verified web addresses from your web browser before you click, and don't forget to first hover your mouse over the link. This will tell you where the link is really sending you. Do not assume Caller ID is valid! Information like phone numbers and email addresses can usually be verified on legitimate websites or with the company’s customer service team.

2. Beware of Red Flags – Unusual links, errors in spelling, grammar, or claims of transactions on your accounts with pressure tactics like, “URGENT: Reply Now” are all indicators that the message is likely a scam. 

3. Never Provide Sensitive Information – Legitimate businesses like delivery and fulfilment services will never ask you for personal information over the phone or email. If you get a call requesting sensitive information, hang up and call the number on the website or the one that’s provided on your order receipt or statement.
