The Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland (ACEI) was in London yesterday to launch with Graeme Tinney and the Griffiths & Armour team’s excellent white paper on risk, insurance and the construction industry. ‘Constructing Change’ sets out a route to fairer contractual relations in construction and sets out how construction, government, insurance and legal professions can work together to create a collaborative contractual environment and ultimately improve productivity, innovation and delivery in construction. We will not resolve our housing, infrastructure and climate change challenges, nor digitalise the construction industry, under the ‘status quo’ in contracts. The design professions (mostly SMEs) should not have to carry insurance for an entire project and all its partners - that are many times their size - and can be held liable for the mistakes of others. Net contribution clauses are the answer and clients who utilise them will benefit as their consultant engineers can collaborate, innovate and deliver value more effectively under these conditions. Another busy week for the ACEI working on behalf of the consulting engineering sector. Director General, Shane Dempsey , hosted the Department of Public Expenditure NDP Delivery & Reform ’s Build Digital and National Standards Authority of Ireland conference on the BIM mandate. Digitalisation of construction is the solution to our skills shortages, enhancing our ability to delivery housing and infrastructure sustainably and in reducing delays and disputes in construction. After that we attended Mott MacDonald ’s 70th anniversary in Ireland with executive member Gemma McCarthy. Hearing about the impact they have made in Irish society over 7 decades including the Luas was brilliant.

A highly productive day for the ACEI in the West! The day started with insightful discussions with our colleagues in the Construction Industry, followed by a great Executive Committee meeting hosted at TOBIN 's HQ – a big thank you to Ciaran McGovern for accommodating us. We also had the opportunity to meet with Minister Dara Calleary to discuss the introduction of NCCs and other key industry issues. The day wrapped up on a high note with an evening networking event at the Hyde Hotel.
