[1] Revenue & Expenses

Revenue grew 25% year-on-year📈

Total expenditure was ₹2,37,375 Cr vs ₹2,06,391 Cr. in 2021-22. Let’s understand the revenue break-up!👇

[2] Revenue breakup (Freight services)

Indian railways earns approximately 67% from the transportation of goods🚂

Freight revenue: ₹1.62 lakh crores (15% growth YoY). Commodity-wise breakup👇

Coal accounted for 48% of the total freight volume carried by Indian railways. 

Other than that, commodities like iron ore, cement, food grains, etc. drove the maximum traffic. Data for the period Jan-Dec’22.

[3] Passenger revenue

Indian Railways earned ₹63,300 Cr in passenger revenue in FY23 It grew 61% from FY22’s passenger revenue of ₹39,214 cr.

The passenger traffic in AC 3-tier rose from 1.5% in 2012 to 7.6% in 2022📈

In 2022, Indian Railways made ₹37,855 crore from non-suburban passengers. 3rd AC class accounted for ₹12,225 cr (32.3%).

IRCTC sold packaged water (Railneer) worth ₹290 crores in FY23 (74% YoY growth).

Apart from that, IRCTC earns money from the sale of food and beverages as well.

Internet ticketing provides a convenient way to book tickets online.

Convenience fees account for ₹801.97 Cr revenue and are charged as follows:

🔸Non-AC: ₹15 +GST/ticket (₹10 via BHIM/UPI).
🔸AC class: ₹30 +GST/ticket (₹20 via BHIM/UPI).

[10] Catering services have generated ₹1,448.79 Cr. 

Income from on-board services on Rajdhani/Shatabdi/premium trains has yielded massive revenues, contributing ₹800 Cr.

IRCTC also generates revenue from user charges, license fees, and others at Food Plazas

[11] Maharaja Express by IRCTC earns ₹55.37 crores

The luxurious set of trains has a fare of ₹4 Lakh/adult for the basic package.

It goes up to ₹21 lakh per person for a presidential suite!👑

And Lyft learned it the hard way.

Lyft is the 2nd largest online cab service provider in USA.

Recently when they announced their Q4 results, people got so cheered up by the numbers that Lyft's stock surged by 67%.

A while later, an employee caught something unusual. Something that literally 'dropped her jaw'.

The result they released had forecasted a profit margin growth for 2024 by 500 basis points, while they actually meant to say 50 basis points.

(1 basis point = 0.01%)

There was an extra zero out there.

So they bucked up courage & came out declaring that they screwed up.

As soon as the clarification went out, the boomed up stock price came rolling down.

Yet, the stock closed on a higher side that day as the results still matched analyst expectations.

But it's not the first time in history when small typos made big blunders.

In 1962, NASA's satellite mission for Venus 'Mariner 1' failed during the launch.

Reason: a typo in the launch vehicle's software code.

And do you know that the founders of Google had a different name in mind for the company, the name 'Google' is actually a result of a typing error.
