Establishing the Backbone of a Lithium Hydroxide (LiOH) Production Plant, a Core Material for Electric Vehicles 🚘🔋

The INNOX Lithium Lithium Hydroxide Phase-1 site has commenced one of its major milestones, the steel structure erection. Despite challenging construction conditions due to a congested site and elevation differences of each area, the project began a week ahead of schedule, thanks to meticulous schedule management and the dedicated efforts of our staff.

📍 The INNOX Lithium Hydroxide Phase-1 project, located in Cheongju, Chungbuk, South Korea, involves the construction of a facility to produce 20,000 tons per year of lithium hydroxide, a crucial material for secondary batteries. Commissioned by INNOX Lithium Co., Ltd., the project began in January of this year and is expected to achieve mechanical completion by June 2025.

🔋 Lithium, often referred to as ‘white oil,’ is an essential component of batteries used in electric vehicles and mobile phones. LiOH (lithium hydroxide) is particularly recognized as a key material for high-capacity rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles.

🏅 DL E&C: Builders of Olympic Excellence

As the Summer Olympics in Paris unfold, we reflect on DL E&C’s exceptional contribution to the Olympic legacy through our state-of-the-art construction technologies.

🎢 PyeongChang Sliding Center

For the 2018 Winter Olympics, DL E&C constructed the PyeongChang Sliding Center, a feat of engineering accomplished in just 15 months, a record-breaking timeline for such a complex structure. This venue hosts events for bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge.

♒ Laser-Cut Jigs

The construction of the sliding center involves creating an approximately 2km long, giant ice slide. The core task is installing the ‘jigs’ (supports for the freezing pipes), which form the track’s framework. Until then, countries constructing sliding centers manually produced and installed jigs on-site. This method required considerable time and expense and was prone to errors.

However, DL E&C, which was responsible for constructing the PyeongChang Sliding Center, questioned this approach. Based on its extensive experience in bridge construction, DL E&C introduced a method of mass-producing jigs in a factory using laser cutting, as if stamping them out. As a result, they produced hundreds of jigs in just one month, improving both the speed and quality of the jigs.

The PyeongChang Sliding Center not only met but exceeded international standards, receiving accolades from the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) and the International Luge Federation (FIL) for its flawless construction. Additionally, the Laser-Cut Jigs technology has been internationally recognized, securing patents in the United States, China, and South Korea.

➡ Can you introduce yourself and your role?

“Hello, I’m Lee Han-Jin, a new employee in the Process Engineering Team of the Plant Division at DL E&C. Currently, I’m assigned to a project that involves designing an ammonia production plant. Specifically, I review and create design-related documents such as P&ID and datasheets. As a new employee, there’s still a lot to learn, but I strive to understand the overall workflow by reviewing emails exchanged with related departments and identifying queries and changes.”

➡ What is the most important aspect of your job?

“Communication is extremely important. Process design is the first step in the design phase, and decisions made here affect many other departments. If communication with other departments is lacking, it can impact the entire project. That’s why I think communication is the most critical aspect of our work.”

➡ What’s it like working at DL E&C?

"DL E&C is excellent for employee growth. The company has extensive project experience and systems like the DL Library, which have been very helpful. The culture is open and supportive, contrary to my initial worries about a rigid atmosphere. The flexible work environment and structured training program have made it easy for me to adapt and build strong relationships with my peers.”
