TMC the metals company Inc., a deep-sea minerals exploration company, focuses on the collection, processing, and refining of polymetallic nodules found on the seafloor in the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the south-west of San Diego, California. The company primarily explores for nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese products. TMC the metals company Inc., through its subsidiaries, holds exploration rights in three polymetallic nodule contract areas in the CCZ of the Pacific Ocean. Its products are used in electric vehicles (EV), renewable energy storage markets, EV wiring, clean energy transmission, manganese alloy production required for steel production, and other applications. The company was formerly known as Sustainable Opportunities Acquisition Corporation and changed its name to TMC the metals company Inc. TMC the metals company Inc. was incorporated in 2019 and is based in Vancouver, Canada.

The Metals Company was founded in 2021 through the merger of DeepGreen and the Sustainable Opportunities Acquisition Corporation, to scale nodule collecting and onshore processing systems.

We produce metals from polymetallic rocks to power electric vehicles. For over a decade, we’ve been exploring the planet’s largest known deposit of battery-grade metals: nodules on the seafloor of the Clarion Clipperton Zone in the Pacific Ocean. During this time, our onshore team has developed and successfully deployed a metallurgical system to derive key battery-grade metals from these remarkable rocks while generating zero solid processing waste.

Our team is made up of scientists, environmentalists, engineers, architects, and business leaders who see the climate crisis as the biggest challenge of our time. Electric vehicles and renewable energy are a key part of the solution, but scaling these technologies will require hundreds of millions of tons of new metals. Polymetallic nodules represent the cleanest source of battery grade metals on the planet and the best path forward.

Allseas and TMC subsidiary NORI recently wrapped up the first integrated #nodule collection system trials in the CCZ since the 1970s, collecting roughly 4,500 tonnes of nodules and lifting over 3,000 tonnes up a 4.3km-long riser to the surface. The pilot system will next be upgraded to a production capacity of 1.3 million tonnes per annum ahead of our first commercial project, Project Zero. As low-cost Indonesian #nickel production continues to displace Western producers, a new paper quantifies the scale of local land-use change and finds that the resulting land footprint from mining rainforest nickel laterites is 20 times larger than prior estimates (42 ± 7 m2 per ton of nickel @ 1.7% ore grade).

The results are in line with an earlier Benchmark Mineral Intelligence study assessing the loss of carbon stocks and sequestration services from land use change (41 - 56 m2 per ton of nickel for 1.35% saprolite ore grade and 1.5% limonite ore grade, respectively). When added to the GWP of an earlier Benchmark LCA, the total carbon impact per kg of nickel rises by 7-49% for RKEF and HPAL processing routes respectively.
