"Pioneering work for Germany and Europe” - that’s how Minister Robert Habeck summed up the importance of our LOHC technology for the German and the European hydrogen economy. We were very happy to welcome Ministers Robert Habeck, Hubert Aiwanger and Florian Herrmann at our headquarters and of course gave them a tour of our technical hall to show them our small-scale plants. Their genuine appreciation for the insights into our innovative technology "Made in Germany" was particularly rewarding for us! The Ministers emphasized how we are strengthening the German and Bavarian industry – both as an innovative company located in Bavaria ourselves and by bringing the hydrogen to where it is most needed, the German hydrogen off-takers. Minister Habeck particularly highlighted the flexibility of our LOHC technology in addition to the planned pipeline network, as we can supply new or remote industrial off-takers using tanker trucks on the streets and barges on rivers. The innate safety and ease of use of our LOHC technology were also much appreciated, as our carrier material benzyltoluene can utilize conventional fuel infrastructure for hydrogen transportation that might otherwise be phased out as we move further away from carbon-based fuels. It’s great to have the support of both the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz on a national level and the Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wirtschaft, Landesentwicklung und Energie from the Bavarian side for the important matter of supplying Germany’s industrial off-takers with hydrogen. Let’s continue building the German hydrogen landscape together!

Have you ever noticed that our LOHC technology works a little like strawberry jam? If you're looking for an easy way to explain our technology, this one's for you: 🍓 Sadly, strawberries don't grow all year round in Germany, so we have to import them in the off-season from August to April. 💧 And just like strawberries, renewable hydrogen is not always available when or where it is needed. 🍓 But how do you import strawberries? Fresh or jam? Strawberry jam is much easier to handle than fresh strawberries, but you have to use heat and sugar and lose some of the vitamins. 💧 Similarly, there are various ways of transporting hydrogen. And while our LOHC also requires “ingredients” such as heat, it allows for very safe and stable hydrogen transport. 💚 If you can get fresh, local strawberries - we highly recommend using them right away! Of course, wherever local green hydrogen production AND off-take is possible, it is always better to use it directly. 🫙 And if you have an abundance of fresh strawberries: Consider preserving them as jam for the off-season! Just like that, we can store green hydrogen seasonally in our LOHC benzyltoluene for a stable, year-round energy supply. 🥪 Does this analogy work perfectly in every respect? Of course not! Farewell Copenhagen! The first World Hydrogen Week at the new venue has just ended. Time for us to draw a conclusion. WHW was once again an incredible opportunity to share our vision of a hydrogen economy powered by LOHC. The potential of hydrogen for achieving climate goals worldwide is still top of the agenda, but challenges of safe transport and storage have been key obstacles to its global adoption. What do screw cleat soccer shoes and our LOHC technology have in common? More than you might think, it turns out! ⬇️ 1. Innovation Made in Erlangen 💡 The simplest answer would be: Both are innovations “made in Erlangen”! Back in the 1950s, Adidas founder Adolf "Adi" Dassler worked with the Erlanger master mechanic Max Elsner to produce the revolutionary screw cleats at the Weidenweg, our current headquarters! 2. Stability in rainy weather ☔ In a rainy weather, soccer players could swap out the good-weather cleats for ones better suited for muddy underground – most remarkably, the German men's soccer team used them in the 1954 World Cup final against Hungary. And in regions or at times when weather-dependent renewable energy is not available, we can import clean energy via green hydrogen thanks to our flexible and reliable LOHC technology. 3. Greater safety ✅ The screw cleat shoes made the soccer player’s grip better and the game safer – and our LOHC technology is also a game changer in terms of safety, as it enables safe hydrogen storage and transportation at ambient conditions! 4. Supporting Germany’s success 💪 So these revolutionary screw cleat shoes played a key role in Germany winning the 1954 Men's World Cup. Hydrogen's role in a clean energy future is undeniable, but its transportation and storage present significant challenges. The flexibility our LOHC technology offers by utilizing the liquid organic hydrogen carrier benzyltoluene can overcome these hurdles: 💧 Universal Applications: LOHC's versatility allows for its integration into various sectors, from transportation and energy storage to industrial processes as the released hydrogen reaches fuel cell grade hydrogen purity according to ISO 14687. 🚢 Infrastructure Compatibility: LOHC-BT can be transported and stored using existing liquid fuel infrastructure, including ships, tanks, and trucks. Transporting our LOHC benzyltoluene does not require the specialized infrastructure needed for e.g. cryogenic liquid hydrogen and it also does not face the increasing restrictions as ammonia does. ↗ Scalability: Whether it's a small-scale scientific or commercial project or a large-scale industrial application, our LOHC technology can be scaled to meet any requirement. 🕸 Addition to pipeline network: Our LOHC technology works particularly well as an addition to the pipeline network, offering greater flexibility. As the German Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck emphasized: “The many sites that cannot be supplied with the pipeline network will be reached with LOHC technology and of course this can also be scaled up to large ship transports across the world's oceans. Founded in 2013, Hydrogenious Technoloiges is a spin-off of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg by its CEO Dr. Daniel Teichmann and the three co-founders Prof. Wolfgang Arlt, Prof. Peter Wasserscheid and Prof. Eberhardt Schlücker.

The need for safe and efficient hydrogen storage for multi-MWh energy storage systems and safe and reliable hydrogen storage for hydrogen refuelling stations and fuel cell mobility was imminent – and Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC) proved to be the solution. Having completed the technological proof of concept at the university’s laboratories, the idea became reality and Hydrogenious Technologies, a global pioneer in LOHC based energy storage, was born.

With the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg becoming a shareholder in May 2014 and the successful close of a Series A funding round in July 2014 with Anglo American Platinum as investor, Hydrogenious Technologies is now backed with strong scientific, strategic and financial capacities to revolutionize large-scale energy and hydrogen storage.
