SGX-listed China carmaker Nio makes South-east Asia debut in Singapore
China-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Nio has announced the start of retail operations in Singapore in the first quarter of 2026, marking its South-east Asia debut. The company will launch its Firefly compact hatchback as the first model in the region, making Singapore the first Southeast Asian market to receive this right-hand-drive vehicle. Nio has appointed Wearnes Automotive as its distributor in Singapore, a company with a strong presence in luxury automotive brands. The Firefly is Nio's first right-hand-drive model and is part of the company's broader global expansion strategy, which includes plans to enter additional European markets and Australia. Nio's battery-swapping technology, a key differentiator, is under evaluation for potential implementation in Singapore, although it is currently not permitted for passenger EVs in the country. Despite ongoing financial challenges, including a net loss of 6.8 billion yuan (S$1.2 billion) for the quarter ended March 2025, Nio remains confident in achieving profitability in the fourth quarter. The company, which went public in 2018 on the NYSE and listed on SGX and HKEX in 2022, has a production volume of around 220,000 vehicles in 2024 and has previously expanded into Europe and parts of Asia, including Costa Rica and Uzbekistan.

Nio CEO Says EV Maker Entered 'Harvest Period,' Reaffirms Profitability Goal
Nio's CEO William Li announced that the Chinese electric vehicle maker is entering a 'harvest period' following years of significant investment in research, infrastructure, and product development. The company reaffirmed its goal of achieving profitability in the fourth quarter, citing upcoming models such as the ES8 and L90 as evidence of a mature product cycle delivering results.
