Steelmakers, energy firms launch study on CCUS hubs across Asia
A consortium of major steelmakers and energy firms, including BHP, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, JSW Steel, Hyundai Steel, Chevron Corporation, and Mitsui & Co., has launched a one-year pre-feasibility study to explore Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) hubs across Asia. The study, managed by Hatch, aims to develop conceptual strategies, cost and schedule estimates, and commercialisation pathways for deploying CCUS in hard-to-abate sectors like steelmaking. It will assess the potential of shared infrastructure to reduce costs, aggregate carbon dioxide volumes, and distribute risks among participants. Options include repurposing captured CO2 for industrial use or transporting it via pipeline or shipping to storage sites in Asia or northern Australia. The project also includes regulatory assessments of intra- and inter-regional CCUS rules and cross-border carbon transport. The study is expected to conclude by the end of 2026, with findings intended to inform industry practices and policy development.

Cross-sector alliance eyes Asia’s first industry-led CCUS hub
BHP, along with major steel and energy companies including ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, JSW Steel, Hyundai Steel, Chevron, and Mitsui & Co., has announced a partnership to conduct a feasibility study for establishing Asia’s first industry-led carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) hub. The one-year initiative aims to assess large-scale CCUS projects with strong storage and utilization potential, focusing on decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors like steelmaking. The study will examine technical, regulatory, and economic factors, including cross-border storage and transport, and target outcomes such as reduced unit costs, economic viability, and shared risk and cost structures. McKinsey identifies three potential CCUS development pathways in Southeast Asia—storage-led, emissions-source-led, and cross-industry-led—with Thailand and Indonesia as potential hubs. However, the region faces challenges including high CCUS costs relative to carbon prices, uncertain regulatory frameworks, and technological limitations.

Global consortium launches study on carbon capture hubs to support Asia's decarbonization
A global consortium of major steelmakers and industry players has launched Asia's first independent study on large-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) hubs to support decarbonization in hard-to-abate industries. The study aims to explore scalable solutions for repurposing or storing captured carbon dioxide (CO2), including its use in industrial processes or transport to storage sites in Asia or Northern Australia. The consortium includes ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, JSW Steel, Hyundai Steel Company, BHP, Chevron, and Mitsui & Co., Ltd., and has appointed Hatch as Project Management Officer in collaboration with the Global CCS Institute, McDaniel, and Pace CCS. The initiative focuses on leveraging shared infrastructure and economies of scale to reduce costs, improve scalability, and fairly share risks and costs among participants.

Argentina's copper dreams need infrastructure - but who will build it?
Argentina's copper deposits in the northern Andes require infrastructure development to unlock mining potential, despite government austerity measures. The country faces challenges in building roads, power lines, and other infrastructure needed for projects like Vicuna and Taca Taca, which could boost exports to $15.4 billion by 2030. Private sector involvement, including partnerships with BHP, Rio Tinto, and McEwen Mining, is being explored to address infrastructure gaps.
