Representatives from Austria, Belgium, Greece, Spain and Northern Ireland gathered in Madrid, on 15–17 October, for a peer-learning activity, as part of the Agency's Quality Assurance, Monitoring and Accountability (QAMA) activity. The event marked a milestone in the development of a quality assurance, monitoring and accountability framework for inclusive education. Participants exchanged insights on the differences and similarities between country systems and the challenges encountered at school, regional and national levels. A visit to Colegio Público El Sol, where learners with hearing impairments and other needs learn alongside hearing learners, showcased inclusive education in action. On 9-10 October, the ‘35 Years of Jean Monnet Actions’ Anniversary Conference took place in Brussels, marking a significant milestone in supporting education and training research across the EU. The event brought together academics, researchers and organisations from around the globe to discuss pressing EU matters. Participants engaged in workshops exploring topics such as European citizenship education. The conference also highlighted the expansion of Jean Monnet actions under the new Erasmus+ programme, covering a European dimension of teaching across the educational landscape. The Agency has been a beneficiary since 2007, becoming one of six institutions to receive an operating grant. Around 200 participants participated in the final conference of the ‘Promoting Inclusive Education in Greece, Phase II’ project, held on 23 September in Athens, Greece. Co-organised by the Greek Ministry of Education, the Agency and the European Commission, the hybrid event brought together key educational stakeholders to discuss the outputs of the project, which supported the Ministry in establishing an inclusive education policy framework. This milestone event featured addresses from Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, DG REFORM Director Nathalie Berger and Agency director Cor J. W. Meijer. Agency representatives shared project results, including reformed educational tools, an implementation roadmap and a set of recommendations for promoting inclusive practices in schools. The Agency recently took part in the Schools as Inclusive Hubs seminar at the Åbo Akademi University , in Finland. This hybrid event gathered educators, analysts and practitioners to discuss how to better support diverse learners, particularly those with an immigrant background. The seminar showcased key findings from the Inclusive Hubs project titled ‘A whole school approach to transform schools into inclusive hubs’ https://inclusivehubs.eu/ and featured an OECD - OCDE presentation on promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in education. Participants shared experiences from Cyprus, Greece and Portugal, followed by a panel discussion on supporting immigrant students. The Changing Role of Specialist Provision in Supporting Inclusive Education (CROSP) activity focused on the re-organisation of specialist provision to support the right to inclusive education for all learners. The activity highlighted four key factors: governance mechanisms, funding mechanisms, capacity-building mechanisms and quality assurance mechanisms for specialist provision to promote transparent and accountable systems. Every year on 5 October, educators around the world celebrate World Teachers’ Day. Established in 1994, it is a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education but also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally. This year’s theme is ‘Valuing teacher voices: towards a new social contract for education’, which highlights the need to address the systemic challenges teachers face and to establish a more inclusive dialogue about their role in education. School failure has been linked to a lack of inclusion and fairness in the education system. While preventing school failure at the system level is frequently mentioned as an important issue, a focus on individual learners seems to prevail. The Preventing School Failure (PSF) project aimed to address this gap, by highlighting the link between school failure and inclusive policies. Adapted from the Agency's ecosystem model of inclusive education systems, the ‘Preventing School Failure’ infographic focuses on the four ecosystem levels and represents the elements of the model that are relevant for preventing school failure. The final conference for the Promoting Inclusive Education in Greece, Phase 2 project will take place on 23 September, in Athens. Funded by the European Union through the Technical Support Instrument, the project supports the Greek Ministry of Education in fostering inclusive education for all learners. Ministry officials, education professionals and policy experts will come together to discuss the project’s contributions, focusing on three priorities: inclusive transitions, inclusive assessment and inclusive school guidelines. During this hybrid event, the Agency will present the results of the project, including a roadmap for implementation and recommendations for inclusive practices in schools. The Agency recently released the methodology report of the Country System Mapping (CSM) activity, offering a deep dive into how education systems across Europe address inclusive education. Conducted throughout 2022 and 2023, the CSM activity provides insights into how the needs of all learners are addressed within member countries. The methodology report outlines the steps and procedures implemented during the CSM activity and explains how these findings will guide the Agency’s future initiatives.
