That’s why Dr. Toi Harris, senior vice president and chief equity, diversity and inclusion officer, moderated a national panel hosted by the American Psychiatric Association and Morehouse School of Medicine. The panel recognized Black History Month by discussing strategies to advance mental health in the African American community by fostering inclusion in educational and workplace settings.


When Jhariel, a pediatric nurse with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, noticed that some of her young patients needed specific products based on their hair type for personal care during longer hospital stays, she wanted to personalize the experience for all children with the same need. That's when the Twists, Locs and Curls Project was born.

Dr. Emily Weber, vice president and chief nursing and operations officer at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, has been awarded the 2023 Excellence in Leadership Award by the Texas Organization for Nursing Leadership (TONL).

According to TONL, the Excellence in Leadership Award recognizes nurse executives who excel in connecting with nursing staff and demonstrate significant involvement in community health initiatives.

Dr. Howard Scott credits his Jamaican heritage for instilling values of diversity and community that have stayed with him to this day. 

“Professionally, my philosophy is to try to be the best at whatever you do. On a personal level, I have learned not to place labels on individuals. Each individual should be judged on the content of their character.” 

Those values he learned early on remain at the forefront of his efforts to deliver care that takes account of a patient’s background, identity and culture as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center and Greater Heights Hospital. 

“The provision of health care does not occur in a vacuum, with individuals having varying perceptions of care influenced by cultural norms,” he says. “This knowledge makes me always strive to provide patient-centered, culturally competent care.”
