This International Women’s Day, we’re sharing copies of Good Night Stories For Rebel Girls with community groups and Brandon BioCatalyst members.
 
Our decision was sparked by a recent Australian study that showed that by age 7 to 8, 22% of boys aspire to STEM careers, and only 6% of girls share the same aspiration*. 
 
Whilst this year’s theme is investing in women, we wanted to do something that invested in inspiration.
 
Some of the incredible Brandon women who trained as scientists, have personalised each book with a note about their careers, which we hope will inspire the children who read them to pursue a career in STEM.
 
But this gesture isn’t just about inspiring the next generation of scientists; it's also about broadening horizons and challenging stereotypes.
 
So, if the girls or boys who read these books discover a non-STEM career outside their current realm of opportunity or picture a woman when asked to think of a scientist, that would be awesome, too.

The Queensland Translation and Commercialisation Skills Gap Program kicked off last week with Brandon UK Venture Partner Dr Roberto Solari and Investment Analyst Dr Melissa Byrne leading seminars introducing the Target Product Profile and the importance of picking the right target.

Here are some key takeouts for research scientists and biotech entrepreneurs from people in the room:

🧭 It's important to acknowledge that failure is common in drug development, predominantly due to efficacy issues.  

🧭 Carefully evaluate potential targets. Thoroughly examine mechanisms of action, related pathways, available modulators, and effective testing strategies.

🧭 Begin with the end in mind. Consider the target product profile (TPP) and envision the pathway to reaching patients, mapping the necessary steps from clinical to preclinical stages and target discovery.

🧭 Identify the key data points for validating target viability. They will guide future investment decisions and shape the trajectory of drug development.
