Mexico's extreme methane emissions from a natural gas pipeline, identified in a research paper, highlight the need for emission mitigation. The study traced the leaks to the El Encino-La Laguna pipeline, operated by Fermaca Pipeline El Encino, owned by the state-owned power utility CFE. The pipeline transports natural gas from the United States to Mexico, with significant methane emissions detected between April and May 2019. Another study revealed methane leaks from Pemex infrastructure in the Ku-Maloob-Zaap oil field cluster in the Gulf of Mexico.
