Thanks William Dean Donovan for the very revealing article. Maybe an essential read for anyone interested in sustainable aviation. One of many points to highlihgt "If SAF were to replace jet fuel ... The resulting increase in ticket costs means the industry could lose 9 trillion revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) in 2050—about the same total as all industry RPKs flown in 2019". Unfortunately the aviation sector does not have a credible plan to decarbonize, and many people in the industry are starting to consider Net Zero 2050 may be a pipedream. "Policy needs to address competition and innovation at the same time". I wonder how the introduction of radical effective policy that really enables decarbonization in aviation may succeed without paying a steep price. Either we fly way less and leave our world more poorly connected (with all its human and economic impact) or we make climate change much worse and face the consequences. That seems to be the dilemma. And I agree new strong policy is part of the answer, but brace ourselves (or else be ready for it to be too late). There should be a generation of new commercial aircraft (like BWBs) with a new airframe paradigm close to enter into service to have any chances to get to Net Zero by 2050, and yet nothing like that is happening: "Airbus and Boeing have no breakthrough airframe programs underway that will solve the industry’s sustainability and demand destruction issues". In summary, let's brace for impact. I understand the scale of what we do in Dovetail Electric Aviation is for now negligible in terms of what is needed, but at least we try to show the way, and we are working hard so that technologies that initially are applicable to small aircraft, can eventually grow and power larger ones. The Wright brothers did not develop a jumbo size prototype first, but paved the way for it. Unfortunate though that we cannot afford 50 years to get there, but we will do our best to accelerate the process.
