When Pat was diagnosed with #prostatecancer in 2022, it came with multiple stressors.

After being seen for a routine physical that was delayed due to the pandemic, his PSA levels were high, prompting his physician to recommend seeing a urologist and having a biopsy. He would soon find out that his physician passed away (stress #1), and was introduced to a new team that recommended surgery (stress #2). Then, followed radiation therapy (stress #3). With little information on the appropriate timing, and reports that spoke in medical jargon, Pat struggled to understand the information before him, eventually going through radiation therapy and short term hormonal therapy.

There are substantial disparities affecting people from racial and ethnic minority groups with higher rates of cancer. 

One in six Black men will develop #prostatecancer in their lifetime, according to ZERO Prostate Cancer, while research from the American Cancer Society shows Black men are more than twice as likely to die from the disease than their White counterparts.

While early action, like screening and detection, is encouraged - it's important to note that not all prostate cancers are the same, underscoring the need to understand a patient's individual risk for outcomes such as metastasis or prostate cancer-specific mortality. Standard #prognostic tools can rely on non-specific and semi-quantitative measures, which may lead to over/under-treatment.
