When people first hear us talking about our Large Medical Model (LMM) they think it is a Large Language Model (LLM), fine-tuned for the medical field but that is not the case. The ‘language’ that our model is learning is actually sequential medical codes (ICDs, CPTs, etc.).

These models try and predict the next best token. So for language, it is the next best [word, sentence, paragraph, etc.] For our model, it is predicting what it believes to be the most likely medical event(s) that will happen in the coming years.Tokenization is very different, so concepts that might take 25+ tokens using language, can be conveyed in 5 tokens.


For example - Quizrise has a token counter that estimates:

Diabetes mellitus due to underlying condition with hyperosmolarity without nonketotic hyperglycemic-hyperosmolar coma (28 tokens)

vs.

E0800 (3 tokens)

The medical code ‘set’ we use is also much smaller than all of written language. So a model with less parameters can be just as, or more powerful than the largest foundational models.

Combining all these aspects, we believe our unique approach to predicting future events will lead to the best outcomes for patients.
