I think many lawyers would be shocked how accurate AI tools are getting.*

Case in point: Paxton AI this week announced they hit ~94% accuracy on Stanford’s Legal Hallucination Benchmark.

• The Stanford Benchmark includes approx 700,000 legal tasks
• Tasks examples: citation retrieval, authorship, and ‘fake dissent’ trick questions.
• Paxton selected a sample of 1,600 tasks from this  and tested their tool, scoring an accuracy rate of over 93%

The data from these tests is published on Github - everyone can see.

If legal AI is going to work, we need to be able to rely on the outputs.  This level of transparency helps, as do external benchmarks. Further iterations like ‘confidence indicators’ will also help increase trust.

We have a long way to go with Legal AI. 

But honestly, I can’t believe these tools are this good, this early in the journey.

*Caveats:

• Yes - these are largely information extraction tasks. AI is not doing complex legal reasoning particularly well right now. 
• We should always be wary of vendors testing their own tech.
• Benchmarks are evolving - watch this space.
