Perplexity is an AI company that specializes in providing smart and helpful virtual assistants.

I just recently started using Perplexity.ai, and I'm super impressed. Its accuracy and citations seem much better than others. (Recommended to me by Jakob Nielsen and Mark Pearce (he,him) -- thanks!)

🔍  Perplexity is positioned as an "answer engine," rather than a free-form conversation tools like ChatGPT. It's a bit unclear to me exactly how it functions differently from other LLMs, but it seems like it's acting as a "meta" search engine -- performing an actual web search, and then synthesizing the answers. (I'd love to hear from people who have more knowledge about this in the comments.)

💬  This is highly related to a recent conversation I led on how AI will impact content marketing. We ended up agreeing that the accuracy and quality of citations in AI bots will be determine whether or not it will make financial sense to continue publishing high-quality information for free on the web.

We’re excited to announce two models we’ve been training in-house: pplx-7b-chat and pplx-70b-chat! Both these models are built on top of open-source LLMs and fine-tuned for chat. They are available as an alpha release, via Labs and pplx-api. Try it out: http://labs.pplx.ai

Our models prioritize intelligence, usefulness, and versatility on an array of tasks, without imposing moral judgments or limitations. Comparing pplx-70b-chat and llama-2-70b-chat (by AI at Meta), human evaluators saw: 22.7% fewer “full denials” and 31.9% more “no denials”

Evaluation prompts were taken from Anthropic AI
  hh-rlhf dataset.

What’s next? We’ll be releasing more models with higher performance in the future. Stay tuned!
