Following Microsoft's Vice Chair and President Brad Smith's keynote and fireside chat, our CEO, Peter Sarlin, will participate in a short fireside on SiloGen's multilingual open source LLMs, prior to taking part in a panel discussion with Elina Lappalainen and Kari Haakana on the impact of GenAI on media and journalists.

Aku Rouhe joins the Silo AI SiloGen team as an AI Scientist! 

Aku is a researcher in the field of speech and language technology who, before joining Silo AI, worked at the Aalto University Speech Recognition Research Group. His research focused on the transition to end-to-end models, and his articles have accumulated close to 700 citations. He is set to defend his PhD thesis in the near future.

Aku enjoys writing everything from short stories and music to research papers and code. As a keen programmer, Aku has been an integral part of the core development team of the popular (>6k GitHub stars) SpeechBrain open-source toolkit since its inception at Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute.

As part of Nordic Innovation's Nordic Ethical AI & Data Ecosystem project, we, together with project partners Accenture and Nordic Innovation are looking for applicants to join a workshop on ethical and responsible use of AI.

This is the first out of four workshops in a new Nordic Ethical AI Sandbox, Olivia Rekman, Advisor at Nordic Innovation explains:

“This industry focused sandbox will be an innovation instrument for Nordic companies to transfer ethical AI capabilities. By bringing the Nordic ecosystem together to find and showcase solutions to real life problems that companies are facing, we expect this sandbox to strengthen Nordic companies’ ability to adopt ethical AI.”

In preparation for this week's AI Summit in the UK, Founders Forum Group and Tech Nation brought together a group of AI founders. The meeting resulted in a letter with four impactful actions the UK Government should take in order to support AI successes. These recommendations were shared with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on October 28th, 2023, but hold true for other European governments as well. Our CEO, Peter Sarlin, is one of the founders who have signed the letter.

As the letter states, "It is now widely accepted that AI will have an even more significant impact on the world than computers and in a far shorter time.", it is worth sharing these recommended actions far and wide:

1. Lead the world by example – widely adopt AI products and services across Government Departments to drive productivity, expertise and growth. Favour contracts over grants.
2. Safely open national datasets to maximise their value before it is eroded through inaction.
3. Upskill existing outcomes-focused regulators with AI proficiency, supplement them where necessary, and avoid stifling innovation.
4. Cultivate the AI startup ecosystem with incentives, support and access to AI talent.

We are seeing more and more conversations and questions that aim to cut through the hype surrounding AI. These are the types of conversations we enjoy participating in.

In this op-ed for Tekniikka&Talous, our CEO Peter Sarlin highlights several key factors in terms of generating value with AI. First and foremost, AI should be at the core of digital products and services, improving the collaboration between humans and machines. As open source-based large language models are democratizing access to LLMs, it is also important to understand when to build something in-house and when to acquire it from a partner.

Rather than a magic wand, AI is a powerful tool to innovate and create value in products, and that through long-term commitment ensures a company's ability to stay competitive.

Adam Hrin joins Silo AI Helsinki office as an AI Engineer! 

With a strong background in software engineering, Adam is excited to apply his skills in machine learning and data science at Silo AI. He has previously worked in the e-commerce industry and has academic experience in NLP and LLMs. As a Research Assistant, he used Explainable AI methods to enhance LLMs trained on historical text data. Additionally, he has worked as a web developer and consultant, creating webshops for multiple clients, developing features, and integrating external services. Adam holds a master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Helsinki.

In his free time, Adam likes to keep his body and soul in peace by doing sports and playing music. He also likes to travel and build lasting bonds with people.

How do you navigate through the hype to create actual value with AI? That was one of the big questions during yesterday's fireside chat. 

With today's conversational user interfaces, powered by LLMs, the opportunities for product innovations are significant. We believe one of the best avenues towards creating value is through highly specialized LLMs that are at the core of your digital products. The more they are used, the better they get. At the end of the day whether or not to include AI in products is a question of staying competitive.

Last week Silo AI CEO & co-founder Peter Sarlin participated in a roundtable with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, as well as a roundtable hosted by Founders Forum in partnership with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) ahead of the UK's AI Safety Summit next month. Minister Paul Scully was responsible for leading the insightful discussion.

In order to have needed guardrails without stifling product innovation, one key element that Peter emphasized was the importance of outcome and usecase-specific regulation, rather than  trying to regulate AI in general.

Discussions such as these are needed on many levels of both civil society and policy making in order to increase the understanding of AI technologies, what can be achieved with them, and to align the discussion with perspectives from all sides of the table.
