Let's talk about "Bigfoot" 👀

You're probably thinking, "Viso is a computer vision platform, why are they bringing up Nicki Minaj's latest song."

Well, it is speculated that some of the album art for Bigfoot is AI-generated. From bizarrely shaped hands to illegible text to inconsistent lighting patterns, we'll leave the final verdict up to you. 🤷

🤔 Why Does This Matter?

In the United States, US District Judge Beryl Howell ruled that only human-generated art or inventions qualify for copyright, thus disqualifying AI-generated materials. 

For Nicki Minaj, this is a big deal because if her album art is truly AI-generated, then under US law she does not have ownership of this very imagery that will no doubt be widely circulated. Aka anyone can legally use this imagery without needing to pay for it. 

Around the world, other governments have started codifying what they believe to be protected intellectual property. India, the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand have chosen to take a different approach and attribute ownership to human individuals, these often being engineers or developers. 

UK copyright law states "In the case of a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work which is computer-generated, the author shall be taken to be the person by whom the arrangements necessary for the creation of the work are undertaken."

🤨 Three key reasons make emotion detection and sentiment analysis a bit controversial in computer vision: 😯

1️⃣ Subjectivity of Emotions: Of course, emotions are subjective and context-dependent. Different cultures, people, or situations may interpret or express emotions differently. 
2️⃣ Facial Expression Variability: Facial expression imagery is a common data source for emotion analysis. While some individuals express emotions subtly, others may be more expressive. 
3️⃣ Cultural Differences: Cultural norms play a role in how emotions are expressed and perceived. What's considered a typical facial expression for a particular emotion in one culture might have a completely different meaning in another.

According to the Activation-Synthesis Theory introduced by Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley in 1977, activation refers to the spontaneous firing of neurons in the brainstem during REM sleep. ☁️

Activation functions in ML (particularly ANNs), just like neural firing, determine the output of artificial neurons in neural networks. Thus, extracting patterns from input data. However, unlike neuron firing while dreaming, the activations in ANNs are purposeful and directed toward specific tasks.

While the Activation-Synthesis Theory doesn't directly inform ML, the analogy conveys the shared concept of interpreting neural activations in both contexts – one in neuroscience, explaining dreaming, and the other in AI and ML. 🧠

What are deepfakes? 👀

Representing one of the more controversial advancements in AI, deepfake algorithms utilize deep neural networks to alter or generate realistic multimedia content. This content can include videos or images created by superimposing one person's likeness onto another. 

We've seen users create deepfakes of themselves to appear older or in Anthony Bourdain's biopic, to replicate his voice.  

While deepfakes definitely hold entertainment value, their potential for misuse has sparked concerns. 

⭕ Spreading misinformation: an altered video of Nancy Pelosi showed the ex-US Speaker of the House stammering while delivering a speech. 
⭕ Identity theft: a doctored video of a CEO was sent to employees, which demanded a transfer of more than 220k euros to a Hungarian supplier. 
⭕ Cyber-threats: A Pennsylvania mother sent harassing videos to her daughter's peers on the cheer team.
