Gran Tierra’s Hilos de la Tierra project participants, Dayana Yorlie Mamiam and Francisco Jansasoy from the Putumayo and Carmina Medina from the Middle Magdalena Valley were sponsored by Gran Tierra Energy and travelled to Canada to be present at Vancouver Fashion Week 2023. Here is what Carmina had to say about being there and sharing her community’s work and culture with the world on the international runway.

“This was a very enriching life experience from a personal and professional point of view. Being able to be part of the Cecilia collection in Vancouver was simply wonderful. During the event, I was able to learn about the logistics and all of the backstage work required for an international runway. It was also incredible to see how, in one of the most important markets in Vancouver, there are clothing stores with dresses very similar to the ones I produce. That allowed me to be inspired and dream of trying to grow my business even more and one day be able to sell my clothes in other countries, to have a higher income and generate more local employment in my own town.”
 
The Hilos de la Tierra project supports Indigenous communities in their work with traditional artisanal approaches and builds capacity in order to produce and market their designs and products. The program brings 7 Indigenous communities together from Putumayo and Middle Magdalena Valley. As part of the project, they learned and collaborated with Juan Pablo Socarrás Yani to help create and make his latest collection of clothing and fashion accessories.

Los participantes del proyecto Hilos de la Tierra de Gran Tierra, Dayana Yorlie Mamiam y Francisco Jansasoy del Putumayo y Carmina Medina del Valle Medio del Magdalena fueron patrocinados por Gran Tierra Energy para viajar a Canadá y estar presentes en la Semana de la Moda de Vancouver 2023. Carmina compartió su testimonio sobre lo que significó para ella estar allí y compartir el trabajo y la cultura de su comunidad con el mundo en la pasarela internacional. 

“Esta fue una experiencia de vida muy enriquecedora desde el punto de vista personal y profesional. Poder ser parte de la colección de Cecilia en Vancouver fue simplemente maravilloso. Durante el evento pude aprender sobre la logística y todo el trabajo detrás de escena que requiere una pasarela internacional. También fue increíble ver como en uno de los mercados más importantes de Vancouver hay tiendas de ropa con vestidos muy similares a los que yo produzco. Eso me permitió inspirarme y soñar con hacer crecer aún más mi negocio y algún día poder vender mi ropa en otros países, tener mayores ingresos y generar más empleo local en mi propia ciudad”.

El proyecto Hilos de la Tierra apoya a comunidades indígenas en su trabajo con enfoques artesanales tradicionales y desarrolla capacidades para producir y comercializar sus diseños y productos. El programa reúne a 7 comunidades indígenas del Putumayo y el Valle Medio del Magdalena mientras que como parte del proyecto aprenden y colaboran con Juan Pablo Socarrás Yani para ayudar a crear y confeccionar su última colección de ropa y accesorios de moda.

Gran Tierra Energy was pleased to participate today at the Colombian Congress of Oil, Gas and Energy hosted by the Colombian Association of Petroleum Engineers (ACIPET). Gran Tierra Energy shared the progress and impacts of its sustainability strategy.

Manuel Buitrago, Country Manager of Gran Tierra Energy in Colombia, participated in one of the panels today and shared that “at the core of GTE’s sustainability activities is the goal of ensuring that the people and regions next to our operations can positively benefit as a result of the Company’s presence. We will continue identifying investment opportunities that support programs that are focused on protecting the environment and improving the quality of life for the local communities living near our operations."
