We’re at an inflection point in maternal mental health—rates are higher than ever, but access to affordable, accessible, effective, and timely behavioral health care is more limited than ever. 

Increasing the supply of behavioral health providers isn't really an option. It doesn't overcome the access barriers many moms face—childcare, logistics, stigma and shame. Plus, it's expensive. It's not reliably inclusive. And there just are not an infinite number of therapists to meet the rising demand.

But what if we could reduce the need for behavioral health services by preventing maternal mental health conditions in the first place?

Now that feels possible.

For a country that spends approximately 1/3 of its GDP on healthcare and has worsening outcomes for pregnant people and their infants…well, I don’t know exactly what to say. We can point to the pandemic but that doesn’t erase our abysmal track record compared to all other industrialized countries, even prior to the last couple of years. To add to this politization of pregnancy care, prenatal care deserts, people in droves are seeking pregnancy care outside of their state. Perhaps that isn’t far enough.

"Perinatal mood and mental health disorders take a higher toll on individuals from historically marginalized communities. Black and Indigenous women are two to three times more likely to experience maternal mental health conditions, but are less likely to receive a diagnosis or have access to the appropriate care than White women. While postpartum suicide rates are higher among White women, Black and Hispanic women have two times the rate of suicidal thoughts and Asian women have nine times the rate of suicidal thoughts compared to White women. Factors that drive the difference in experiences of maternal mental health are varied and include financial barriers, stigma associated with mental health struggles, structural racism and a mistrust of the health care system due to historical mistreatment." - Joanne Armstrong in an interview with Cara McNulty.
