A Solo Founder’s Reflection – Why Courage and Competence Matter More Than Ever. Nearly Eighteen months ago, I took a step that many would consider risky; leaving behind a well-established corporate career to build something new and start 7 Rules Cyber . I didn’t have it all figured out, but I had two principles that have guided me through every challenge: courage and competence. These are the qualities that truly matter when navigating uncertainty, especially in today’s economic climate. During this period, I’ve had the privilege of advising Australia’s most critical sectors—Government and Infrastructure—and working with the nation’s leading governance bodies, like the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Governance Institute of Australia. Meetings with Ministers and key decision-makers have been part of the journey, but they aren’t the measure of success. The real achievement is in driving meaningful change and building cyber resilience across industries. I have spoken at around 100 forums and events worldwide. From the big cities to regional hubs like Orange, NSW, my work has taken me from boardrooms to local communities. The range of voices I’ve encountered reflects one truth: the need for practical, tailored solutions is universal. This is where my philosophy of cutting through the noise has delivered real results. The 7 Rules Cyber Framework and the 3C Approach to Enterprise Security Architecture weren’t designed to win awards. They were built to solve real, pressing problems—addressing patching inefficiencies, overcoming tool sprawl, and creating strategies that genuinely strengthen organisational resilience. Stepping away from the cookie-cutter, template-driven consulting model was the best decision I’ve made. I’ve focused on delivering executive teams something that can’t be bought off the shelf: hard-earned expertise, tailored to their unique needs. Whether it’s crafting cyber security roadmaps or facilitating board-level exercises that build true muscle memory, my work is about helping organisations prepare for what’s coming, not just what’s already happened. Yes, the industry recognition—Cyber Security Consultant of the Year, Excellence in Cyber Security—has been rewarding, but they aren’t the reason I’m sharing this. What truly drives me is knowing I’ve built a business rooted in courage, competence, and backed by the goodwill of my community, all fuelled by relentless hard work. For those navigating uncertain times, know that the decisions made in the unknown are the ones that set the stage for real growth. Playing it safe never leads to doing what hasn’t been done before. This is just one part of my journey. There’s much more to explore, including ventures that extend beyond cyber security and even my work with ISACA . But that’s a story for another time. Today, I express my gratitude to all of you, my family, and those who believed in me when not many did. #cybersecurity
