Structural stainless steel is increasingly used across various applications in the built environment due to its high performance, sustainability, and resilience. This webinar will explore a range of structural stainless steel applications, highlighting project examples that demonstrate its versatility. Presenter: Nancy Baddoo Nancy Baddoo is an Associate Director at The Steel Construction Institute (SCI) in the UK and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. With over 35 years of experience, she has led numerous research projects on the structural performance of stainless steel and has shared her expertise worldwide through publications and seminars. For the past 13 years, Nancy has chaired the European technical committee for the stainless steel Eurocode (EN 1993-1-4). She also contributed significantly to drafting AISC 370-21, the Specification for Structural Stainless Steel Buildings, and is an active member of the AISC Committee on Structural Stainless Steel. Nancy co-authored both editions of AISC Design Guide 27, Structural Stainless Steel. Join our webinar: Stainless steels for the renewable industries Stainless steel plays a key role in renewable energy projects due to its diverse properties, durability, ease of maintenance, and routine recyclability. This webinar offers a brief overview of where stainless steels fit in renewable energy applications and relevant techniques. A primary goal in the renewable sector is reducing greenhouse gas emissions, such as CO2 and methane, in a cost-effective manner without depleting scarce resources. Renewable energy sources include: 🌖 Tidal energy: Harnessing the moon’s gravitational pull on oceans, providing an inexhaustible power source. ☀️ Solar energy: Generating electricity directly through photovoltaics or concentrating sunlight. 🌊 Hydropower: Utilizing water relocated by evaporation, alongside wind and wave power – provided corrosion is controlled. 🌳 Biofuels: Using plants and waste for ethanol or biodiesel production, which can delay CO2 emissions but poses corrosion challenges for lower alloys. 🌋 Geothermal energy: Tapping into the Earth's heat, not just in volcanic areas, but for widespread industrial and domestic use. 'Project Resilience,' Australia’s first large-scale mRNA research hub and vaccine manufacturing facility, will produce up to 100 million vaccine doses annually, including COVID-19 boosters and vaccines for respiratory viruses like influenza and RSV. Pure Piping was engaged to deliver the mechanical pipework and electrical scope, covering design, procurement, installation, pressure testing, passivation, and commissioning. Stainless steel was chosen for its corrosion resistance, durability, and suitability for high-purity pharmaceutical environments, ensuring the facility meets stringent GMP standards. The ASSDA Awards were presented last week on Wednesday 16 October at Blackbird Brisbane, as part of #PacRimStainless2024 , celebrating the exceptional quality and excellence in local stainless steel design, fabrication and delivery.

Congratulations to Matt Taylor , Michelle Davis and the team at Total Piping & Mechanical for winning the ASSDA #StainlessSteel Fabricator Project of the Year Award 2024 in the Process Industries category! The Gisborne Recycled Water Plant Upgrade in Victoria enhances wastewater treatment capacity for the Gisborne and New Gisborne townships, accommodating an average dry weather flow (ADWF) of 5.57 ML/day. TPM executed the mechanical works, installing critical equipment, including seven blowers, aeration pipework, and a centrifuge unit, all using stainless steel. The upgrade also featured advanced chemical dosing systems, an odour control unit, compressed air systems, and a UV treatment system. Precise staging ensured operational continuity in the live brownfield environment while meeting discharge license requirements. The ASSDA Awards were presented last week on Wednesday 16 October at Blackbird Brisbane, as part of #PacRimStainless2024 , celebrating the exceptional quality and excellence in local stainless steel design, fabrication and delivery.

Thrilled to Chair Day 2 of PACRIM Stainless 2024! 🎤 Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of being the Conference Chair for PACRIM Stainless 2024 in Brisbane. It was a fantastic opportunity to lead discussions on the future of stainless steel, featuring some truly inspiring speakers. Highlights of the day included: Geoff Crittenden IWE FIEAust CPEng FIML CMgr CEng MAICD from Weld Australia, who shared valuable insights on the challenges of renewable energy and fabrication. Paul Plater , a seasoned Metallurgical Engineer, discussing stainless steel opportunities in the green economy 🌱. Ian Dryden , who showcased the innovative use of stainless steel in Melbourne's urban design. Jason Fichera, who demonstrated how AI and drones are revolutionising our industry 🚁🤖. We also hosted an exciting Young Professionals Network Discussion Panel, featuring Lachlan Mathers , Peter F. , Jessica Wehbe , and Lissel Pilcher . We had a great conversation around succession planning and its critical importance not just for individual businesses, but for the sustainability and innovation of the entire stainless steel industry. Congratulations to Ronstan Tensile Architecture for winning the ASSDA Fabricator Project of the Year Award 2024 in the Architecture, Building and Construction category! Ronstan Tensile Architecture revolutionised the Narre Warren Station rebuild by replacing 30 tonnes of carbon steel with just 3 tonnes of stainless steel cable. The new cable truss system, comprising precision-engineered stainless steel cables and fittings, supports the station’s ceiling with minimal material use. This innovative design not only reduced the overall weight and complexity of installation but also offered superior corrosion resistance, setting a new standard for sustainable urban infrastructure as part of Melbourne’s Level Crossing Removal initiative.
