This week representatives from Barpa and Icon had the opportunity to attend Social Traders Convene 2024 in Sydney! It was great to witness the growth and impact of the social enterprise sector, filled with businesses dedicated to making a difference. The team heard from businesses, gaining not only great strategies to increase engagement with social enterprises but also a deeper understanding of the motivations behind social procurement and its social and economic impacts. With October being Indigenous Business Month , we’d like to take a moment to share an example of how we’re making our mark At Barpa, we take pride in being an Indigenous-owned business committed to uplifting our communities. As our project value has grown, so has our dedication to supporting Indigenous suppliers. Since 2014, engaging and empowering Indigenous businesses has been at the heart of our mission. We are pleased to share that in the past 12 months, we have invested $23.8 million with Indigenous subcontractors and suppliers, representing 13% of our total expenditure. In just the July to September period, we partnered with 35 Indigenous businesses across Australia. Why is this important? Supporting Indigenous businesses fosters economic growth within our communities, helping them thrive and prosper. This investment translates into direct benefits for individuals and families, enhancing financial security, social mobility, and overall quality of life. At Barpa, our mission is to empower people using construction as a vehicle to do so. Every now and then an opportunity comes along where we can use our capability and experience to make a significant difference to peoples lives. So when the Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF) reached out, our team quickly saw such an opportunity. ACF is an amazing charity that supports children to recover from the trauma of abuse, neglect and family violence. They provide specialist support to help children heal and feel safe, while educating and empowering communities to safeguard children abuse. Their Mitcham facility located in Melbourne, which has been used as a counselling space for 25 years was in need of an uplift and revitalisation, the key objectives of the project included: · Supporting these vital services to continue to support children and families · Ensuring the site was safe and complies with WHS standards · Creation of a welcoming space for children, young people and their families to access where they feel comfortable to work through their trauma. We made the decision early on to provide maximum value per dollar to ACF. Barpa not only priced the work in a collaborative way with ACF, but we also used it as a Community 2Day activity where our office staff got their hands dirty doing demo and landscaping; we reached out to our subcontractor and supplier networks to assist and were overwhelmed with support. The donations and in-kind support we received enabled us to almost double the scope of work we could deliver. The result has transformed the centre and it was great to join ACF staff and stakeholders at the recent opening where Wurundjeri TO Alex Kerr provided a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony to kick off proceedings and explained the stunning artwork he had done for the centre. ACF CEO Janise Mitchell then followed up with a speech outlining their appreciation and how the refurbished facilities will help them better support children and families. This was a project that meant a lot for all involved. This year, Barpa celebrates 10 years of indigenous construction - a decade of empowering communities and delivering excellence in construction. To celebrate this milestone, we took a moment to reflect on our journey and deepen our connection with the rich cultural landscape that inspires our work. We brought our team, members of the Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporations and Icon to Uluru for a cultural immersion experience. Our time at Uluru was a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural respect and the responsibility we carry as we continue to work alongside Aboriginal communities One of the highlights of our visit was the opportunity to connect with local artists and participate in dot painting workshops. Together, we collaborated on a beautiful art piece that symbolises our collective journey and commitment to cultural respect. This experience not only enriched our understanding of Aboriginal art and traditions but also brought us closer as a team and community. We were also privileged to witness the breathtaking Field of Light installation, which illuminated the desert night with its magical glow. The experience of watching the sun rise and set over the living landscape of Uluru reminded us of the deep spiritual connection that the Traditional Owners have with this land, and the importance of preserving and respecting it. We give big thank you to the Northern Territory Government in supporting us to visit and experience this beautiful country and to our incredible team, partners, and communities who have been part of our journey over the past 10 years. #barpa #10yearsofindigenousconstruction #uluru

The Telstra Best of Business Awards celebrate the small and medium-sized businesses and people building Australia's economic, social and cultural prosperity. Barpa, as a finalist in the Indigenous Excellence Award category has been recognised as an Indigenous-led, owned and operated businesses succeeding through entrepreneurialism and inspiring our next generation. Barpa’s Indigenous Coordinator, Jordan Falla , recently attended MobReady ’s new “Journey to Success” program ran at Sydney Secondary College. Jordan and the Mob Ready team visited the Leichhardt and Balmain campuses to meet with their year 10 Indigenous students to speak about the commercial construction industry and the pathways Barpa have to support them on their career journey. The students were able to ask questions about the construction Industry and Jordan helped them understand more by taking them through an interactive activity where they were provided sets of plans and questions which they had to answer from the information on the drawings. Project Completion I QLD Barpa, the Queensland Department of Education , consultants, principal and students recently celebrated the completion of the Sunnybank Senior High School amenities project located on Yugarra Country with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The works comprised the erection and completion of a new sports store, the repurposing of the existing sports store into a new senior amenities block, and the demolition of the existing senior amenities block. There were also works to the existing covered walkways and landscaping to the demolished amenities and outdoor learning areas. In gratitude of the great working relationship between the school and our construction team our multi-talented Snr Project Manager, Darug man Seth Dunn and Gamilaoi and Wiradjari artist Sean Kinchela created a special piece of artwork to be installed in the school Courtyard celebrating the Yugarra people and the many cultures that make up the collective student group of the school. The red represents the land, the black represents the Yuggara people who are the traditional custodians of the land and the magpie lark is their totem. The different colours radiating from the sun represent the diverse cultures and energies radiating from the students of the School. PROJECT AWARDED I WA The Barpa team is proud to announce it has secured the Guided Weapons Explosive Ordnance Storage Program (GWEOSP) project at HMAS Stirling, WA for the Department of Defence Australia . The project involves the Design and Construction of One Earth Covered Building (ECB), providing explosive ordnance storage capacity, engineering services and supporting infrastructure.
