We've managed to achieve excellent winding quality using an automated flyer-based winging machine we have developed from scratch.

Shout out to Daniel Freeman , a QUT (Queensland University of Technology) honours thesis student, who was working on an industry-led project of programming the UAV motor stator winding machine. Daniel has managed to give the brain to our flyer-based automated winding machine, which we developed in-house from scratch, and today we performed the first complete test wind. Daniel has not only programmed the machine, but also developed and implemented a motorized wire feeding and tensioning mechanism, as well as, through extensive R&D work, identified areas of improvement of mechanical design, which he successfully implemented. Daniel is an outstanding high-calibre student and we have little doubt that he will zoom through his final presentation with flying colours! This has been an amazing journey and we would like to thank QUT staff who supported the project along the way: Dr Geoff Walker , academic supervisor, Ching Thye Gan , senior technician. It was very long week for me at ASC24 in Salt Lake City with a lot of absolutely invaluable discussions with various clever people. I am now even more convinced in the feasibility and importance of superconducting homopolar generators. A lot of people are talking about great applications of renewable hydrogen in advanced air mobility, such as cryoelectric aircraft with superconducting propulsion motors, generators and connection cables cooled in-flight by the cryofuel (liquid hydrogen) on board. This extremely elegant solution is thought to reduce (partially eliminate) aviation's carbon footprint, but so far, no adequate amount of renewable hydrogen had ever been produced for such a task. In theory, in order to decarbonize the whole aviation sector in its current entirety, we would need around 250,000 tons of LH₂ per day. Which, again, in theory with all the hydrogen produced by a low-carbon (or carbon-free) process, will reduce global emissions by 2.5 %, or just shy of 1 Gt of carbon dioxide emissions. Similar amounts of hydrogen would be required to decarbonise certain materials production (e.g. iron ore reduction). This is equivalent to electric power of 630 GW. To put this number into perspective, last year, renewables globally made the following average power: hydro – 490 GW, wind – 330 GW, solar – 150 GW. 630 GW is 2/3rd of all renewable electricity in the world. In comparison, approximate mass of fossil-originated methane (CH₄) currently extracted from the Earth is about 7,300,000 tons/day – 3,500,000 tons/day of "hydrogen equivalent". And the amount of methane which is converted into cryogenic liquid form (LNG) for transportation is 1,700,000 tons every single day. If we account for different cryogenic temperatures and gravimetric energy contents of CH₄ and H₂, current LNG production is roughly equivalent to 520,000 tons/day – more than twice of what is needed to provide energy to the current aviation sector. A lot to think about the size of the "beast" we are up against with very limited amount of renewable energy and lack of new energy infrastructure, processes, supply chains and actually devices to use this new energy. It is also worth noting that we don't have "excess renewable energy" to use frivolously. The only reason that local excesses might exist are poor integration and/or economic failures; but in the context of decarbonising the economy we barely have enough to "offset" several percent of the world's emissions. Two things are left for me to do: to submit the manuscript, and then to begin the role of technical editor for IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, in order to ensure good quality publications and the integrity of the process, especially today with the rise of AI tools. Oh, I nearly forgot, just one other little thing: I need to make a 15-hours flight back home, which will burn about 45 tons of aviation fuel and will emit about 140 tons of CO₂, just like that. A sneak peek into our UAV motor stators winding machine project. Such machines can be used to manufacture permanent magnet synchronous motor used for propulsion of drones, as well as to be used in high-performance BLDC servo drives for various robotic applications, including tilt-rotor eVTOLs. We are working hard on building tools for Australian technological sovereignty in advanced air mobility, while strengthening ties with QUT (Queensland University of Technology) ! Our QUT (Queensland University of Technology) intern Daniel Freeman is working on the industry-led thesis project for his double degree in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. Daniel is working on the prototype of an automated stator winding machine for production of small permanent magnet electrical motors. Daniel is obtaining and perfecting valuable engineering skills while working on a real-life application. The machine was proudly designed and made in Australia for Australia-made high-performance propulsion motors, and now it helps to teach the next generation of excellent engineers. All projects are very demanding, and we are more than willing to invest our time and effort into teaching and supporting students in every way possible, but we are expecting to see decent progress in return.
