Inghams in New Zealand is part of pioneering research with geothermal consultancy, Upflow , to create animal nutrition from greenhouse geothermal gases. If the research is successful, New Zealand would be the first country in the world to produce feed for animals from geothermal resources. The New Zealand Government is also co-investing in the project through the Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures Partnership, which is focused on problem-solving through innovation in New Zealand’s food and fibre sector. Two of our farms recently participated in research to study innovative ways to optimise chickens’ range behaviour and their health, to enable us to continually improve the welfare of our animals and the resources that enhance our practices. This research project was sponsored by the AgriFutures Australia Chicken Meat Program and led by Dr Peta Taylor ( University of Melbourne ), Dr Carolyn de Koning and Jessica Jolley ( South Australian Research and Development Institute ) and Jean-Loup Rault (University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna). All of Inghams' barn-raised and free-range broiler farming facilities in Australia are certified by the RSPCA Approved Farming Scheme, and we are the first and only poultry producer in New Zealand to have all of its barn-raised and free-range broiler farms SPCA Certified. Inghams has achieved and surpassed our landfill waste reduction target six years early. Since 2020, we've cut waste-to-landfill intensity by 30%, we have achieved 56% recycled content in packaging, and 86% of our packaging is now recyclable or compostable. Inghams in New Zealand has entered into an agreement that will see Lodestone Energy Limited generate electricity from its multiple solar farms to meet 100% of Inghams' electricity requirements across its New Zealand network, ensuring its operations are more sustainable and resilient. Chief Executive, New Zealand Edward Alexander , said: “Sustainability is at the core of our operations, and this agreement is an important step in delivering on our sustainability targets by sourcing 100% of our electricity requirements from renewable sources."
