We’re hopeful that the answer is yes. 

Something we’re particularly excited about here at NET is electrochemical cement production. Such an approach can be done at room temperature (doing away with the industrial heat needed to heat kilns in traditional production). 

The process can also use any material that includes lime, meaning industrial slag and recycled concrete are fair game. 

What’s left to see is whether the approach can scale up to disrupt the industry 👀

Almost all the cement in the world is “Portland cement” — which is a challenge due to its uniquely polluting chemistry.

What many people don’t know is that Portland cement is so widely used not because it is necessarily the best material for the job, but because using it makes good financial sense.

It’s made from elements found in limestone, which is nearly ubiquitous. That’s why today, it’s generally considered to be a cost-efficient material.

But its production is problematic.

Most Portland cement emissions come from an unavoidable chemical process known as calcination, during which limestone is heated to about 900 degrees Celsius, separating into lime and CO2 as a result. 

44% of the mass of limestone turns into CO2. 

This is why we need not only new ways of providing heat in cement production, but also new technologies altogether.

💡 Do you know what the Haber-Bosch process is?

You should — it’s going to play a critical role in decarbonising the global economy.

It’s the process of combining hydrogen gas with nitrogen gas to make ammonia.

Ammonia is the key to replacing oil and natural gas in powering industrial processes.

But right now, the Haber-Bosch process isn’t exactly “green.” 

To eliminate carbon emissions from ammonia production, both the hydrogen and the energy needed for the operation of the process must be obtained from renewable sources.

That’s why we support the production of green hydrogen. It’s a key step in moving forward.

McKinsey research suggests that global cement production volumes will remain stable until 2050, which means the industry must make active efforts today to reduce emissions.

Ammonia is one solution to achieving reduced emissions in cement production.

It’s an energy-dense, cost-effective source of hydrogen that can be used to help power cement kilns.

And according to Cranfield University, doing so would potentially reduce emissions from the cement and concrete industry by about 16%.
