ACU is home to some of the world's most influential academics in their fields, with four researchers recognised in the prestigious Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher awards. Congratulations to Professor Ester Cerin and Professor Emeritus John Kanis from the The Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research (MMIHR) and Professor Reinhard Pekrun and Professor Richard M Ryan from the Institute for Positive Psychology and Education. The awards recognise the exceptional performance of ACU researchers who have a significant number of papers in the top 1 per cent most cited in their field and year of publication. In the 2024 list, 313 researchers from Australia were recognised across 20 disciplines and a cross-field category. Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) Professor Abid Khan said the achievement reflected ACU's research excellence. "ACU is proud of all our academics recognised in this year's list," Professor Khan said. "Of the world’s scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers are 1 in 1,000, so it's an outstanding achievement. Yesterday ACU hosted another powerful Interfaith Breakfast event, bringing together federal parliamentarians and community and faith leaders inside Parliament House in Canberra. The Federal Parliamentary Interfaith Breakfast, hosted by ACU and co-sponsored by Speaker of the House of Representatives, The Hon Milton Dick MP , featured keynote speaker and renowned religion journalist, Dr Rachael Kohn . Best known as the voice behind ABC Radio National's The Spirit of Things, Dr Kohn encouraged an audience of more than 200 people to respect the foundations of democracy, particularly the contributions of religion and history. Her interest in religion, first as an academic then as a journalist and speaker, led her to believe in the relevance of religion in society. Across 1700 programs that she produced and presented, Dr Kohn interviewed thousands of highly respected religious leaders - from Archbishops, Chief rabbis, the Dalai Lama, local clerics, imams and lay people, professionals and scholars, to "unsung heroes" who found a greater purpose through faith. These interviews, according to Dr Kohn, demonstrated the ways in which religion could encourage community, and therefore, strengthen Australian democracy. "Democracy needs us all to work together in common cause," she said. Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Zlatko Skrbis said Dr Kohn's message echoed the vision of the Parliamentary Interfaith Breakfast, which ACU has hosted across 10 years. He thanked the many leaders, both political and faith-based, for their support since the first Interfaith Breakfast in 2014. "For a decade, this event has given us an opportunity to come together - people of diverse faiths, cultures and political persuasions - to engage in discussion and prayer, and to reflect on the important role that religions serve in our communities," Professor Skrbis said. Cutting-edge stroke research, an innovative industry PhD program, community engagement excellence and teacher education hubs were among the projects recognised at the 2024 Vice-Chancellor's Staff Excellence Awards. The annual awards publicly acknowledge excellence in performance that directly supports the mission of ACU and its 10-year strategic plan, Vision 2033. Top honours went to Professor Timothy McKenry , who received the 2024 Vice-Chancellor's Medal for Excellence in recognition of his exemplary work as Chair of ACU's Academic Board. "The work I've been doing as Chair of the Academic Board isn't just about compliance, policy and procedure - it's about how our students encounter us and how our staff engage," Professor McKenry said. ACU were proud to have a strong contingent at the recent UNISERVITATE 's fifth Global Symposium in Rome this month, which included a private audience with Pope Francis. Hosted at Università LUMSA , the Global Symposium connects Catholic higher education institution members to examine the role of service-learning in transforming minds and hearts. Joining the global meeting on behalf of ACU were Provost Professor Julie Cogin, Vice-President Fr Anthony Casamento CSMA, Community-Engaged Learning Manager Dr Jen Azordegan , Dean of Thomas More Law School Associate Professor Kunle Ola , and ACU law graduate Elena Suares. Both Associate Professor Kunle and Elena were representing the ACU Law School’s Pro Bono program, winner of the 2024 Uniservitate Awards. As well as connecting with Catholic higher education colleagues in service-learning and community engagement, the Uniservitate Global Symposium participants had the honour of shaking hands with Pope Francis following a private meeting in the Clementine Hall at the Vatican. The Holy Father thanked the participants on their commitment to education, and Professor Cogin participated in an invitation-only meeting of University rectors and authorities with Cardinal Jose Tolentine de Mendonca, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education. The Uniservitate network continues to be an important space for ACU to showcase its world-class community engagement and service-learning initiatives and exchange with other leading Catholic institutions in this space.
