In an exciting new collaboration, the University has partnered with HX Hurtigruten Expeditions to offer a world-first education program for people travelling to the Antarctic. HX travellers and expedition teams will have access to a new online course covering everything from the history of human exploration in Antarctica to climate change, wildlife and responsible tourism. Social scientist and program co-leader, Professor Elizabeth Leane , said the course will support travellers make sense of what they're experiencing. “People finishing the course will know about the environment, how it is governed, and how humans have inhabited it and impacted it. They will also learn how they can minimise their own impact and become part of the solution, not the problem,” she said. More: https://utas.au/HX

Last week, the Australian Ambassador in The Hague hosted a reception to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Tim Hawkins Memorial Scholarship. During this meaningful occasion, Professor Tim McCormack was joined by four alumni from the University of Tasmania, including previous scholarship recipients. This scholarship was established in memory of Tim Hawkins, a commerce and law graduate of the University, who was tragically killed in the Bali bombing in 2002. It enables the recipient to take up a position in either the Judges' Chambers or in the Office of the Prosecutor for 9-12 months at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. University alum Dr Bruno Cayoun is a clinical and research psychologist and the principal developer of an internationally recognised method for treating various mental health conditions. The method, known as Mindfulness-integrated Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (MiCBT) is being used worldwide. Dr Cayoun saw his mother suffer from clinical anxiety and depression while growing up in France and wanted to do something to help. After discovering mindfulness as a young adult, he was motivated to study psychology at the University of Tasmania. Now, Dr Cayoun is the founder and Director of the MiCBT Institute. He writes books and training modules for mental health professionals and runs a clinical practice in Hobart. But his initial motivation to help people like his mother remains the same. We're extremely proud that Professor Brett Paull and Dr Chen Zhao have received 2024 Tasmanian STEM Excellence Awards! The awards recognise leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics who are inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers. Professor Brett Paull received the Premier’s Tasmanian STEM Researcher of the Year for his outstanding contributions to analytical chemistry. Dr Chen Zhao received the Tasmanian STEM Early Career Researcher of the Year award for her work on modelling how Antarctica’s ice sheets contribute to rising sea levels. Two University buildings have been recognised as among the best-designed educational buildings in Australia and the world. The Forestry building in Hobart is undergoing restoration to become a modern, inner-city learning centre. The project received the Future Project: Education award at the World Architecture Festival Awards held in Singapore. The River’s Edge building, which forms part of the expanded Inveresk campus in Launceston, has also been acknowledged for its leading educational design. The building was named a winning project at the 2024 Australian Institute of Architects National Awards. Justin Hanlon, Director of Capital Works for the University, said a range of teams deserved credit for the new spaces. “The awards speak to the collective efforts of many teams from across the community and University which has helped shape these campus buildings in ways that are unique to the communities that host them”. Last week our Inveresk Campus hosted the 2024 ACTS | Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability Conference, the event’s first face-to-face conference since the Covid-19 pandemic. Corey Peterson , said the conference was a great opportunity to bring together higher education staff and students from across Australasia to share their knowledge and experiences. Now in its 22nd year, ACTS' Future of Sustainability Conference is a valuable opportunity to bring the sustainability community together, allowing for cross-sectoral dialogue about sustainability and the SDGs.

The Shed is the University's newest building, based on our Inveresk campus in Launceston. From 2025, it'll be the home of a range of health and science courses, supporting future nurses, allied health professionals, pharmacists, psychologists, biomedical scientists and agricultural scientists. Last month, we celebrated the opening of The Shed, the last of the new builds at our Inveresk campus in Launceston. This state-of-the-art home for science and health marks the culmination of a decade-long project carried out with the support of our government partners, to enhance higher education in Northern Tasmania. Now we turn our attention to the South to ensure those students and staff also have the best possible facilities. Today we announced that our plan for the South is a Hobart campus with four sites designed to provide students with exceptional educational experiences built around the best the city has to offer.
