Safety is crucial. A few weeks ago, while riding through Melbourne CBD, I narrowly avoided the six spikes on the wheel of this truck. Although illegal and anti-social, this seems to reflect the attitudes towards bikes and bike lanes by some council candidates in our recent elections. Bike lanes have been a contentious issue in Melbourne's recent council elections. Despite clear global evidence that bike lanes don’t cause congestion and can improve traffic flow, some candidates remain opposed. Melbourne, like many other cities, benefits from the safety and health improvements that bike lanes provide. Everyday, Good Cycles employees, delivery riders, couriers, and commuters rely on cycling for commuting and work. Their safety and health are paramount. As new councils take office, it’s time to focus on effective solutions and stop opposing bike lanes. Expanding bike infrastructure will create a city that is easier to navigate and better for everyone. Good Cycles is proud to receive $50,000 from the TAC Road Safety Grant Program to provide shared e-bike hub services at three housing developments in Flemington, Prahran, and Brighton. This support, announced by Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne, will bolster our eBike Hubs at the Building Communities affordable housing developments in partnership with urban mobility company RideKola. The shared eBikes — complete with helmets, baskets, smart locks and education sessions — offer residents an affordable, eco-friendly transport option. With 1,100 homes across the three sites, and half dedicated to social and affordable housing, these bike hubs empower residents to ride confidently and sustainably.
