More than 13 percent of the Australian population are living in poverty, 1.5 million people are unemployed or underemployed, the bottom fifth of households receive only 2.5 percent of wages, and a quarter of Australians live with a long-term health condition or disability.  Under our country’s prosperous veneer, there is a significant group of people struggling to survive.

Our long-term work with people in hardship confirms an important fact - many are just one life event away from housing stress – losing a job, falling ill, becoming a carer, ending a relationship, being on a temporary visa or experiencing family and domestic violence. Rental affordability is now the worst on record in several capital cities, pushing low-income earners to the fringes of Australian communities. -- Housing is vital to wellbeing and means better outcomes in health, education and employment, economic and social participation. For the people we assist, the lack of pathways out of temporary housing stops them from getting on with their lives, looking for a job, studying and/or taking care of themselves or other family members. -- Policies that improve housing affordability, security, safety and energy efficiency have been neglected for the past 30 years. Associate Professor Tim Nelson and Associate Professor Dr Joel Gilmore invite you and your colleagues to a unique training opportunity. -- Over the course of a day, they will provide five 60-minute modules of content aimed at providing people without formal economics training an opportunity to understand energy economics as it applies to the Australian electricity industry. The course has been designed to focus on economic concepts as they apply to the energy industry for participants with very little formal knowledge of economics. -- Unexpended funds from these events will be used to further the good work of the St Vincent de Paul Society National Council of Australia. We help people in immediate crisis with food, clothing, other everyday essentials, help with bills, a friendly ear to listen and referrals to specialised services. We do not offer any assistance, including loans, through social media. Call Vinnies on 13 18 12 to find the closest assistance to you. 🌻 Imagine being forced to choose between your next meal and a roof over your head. For vulnerable people like Tania* and her children, this is the harsh reality of the unrelenting cost-of-living crisis. Rental costs are soaring. Groceries have never been so expensive. And as a result, struggling families like Tania’s are facing impossible choices. 🌿 At Christmas, these choices are even starker. For many, there’ll be no special meals because there’s rarely enough on the table. And no presents because the rent is overdue. Tania and her three children were at risk of homelessness after escaping an abusive relationship. 🌿 All she wanted was the best life possible for her kids. But it felt so far out of reach. Driven by the deep love she holds for her children, Tania found the courage to seek help from Vinnies. Tania says that the practical support she's received from Vinnies, made possible by supporters like you, has been life-changing. 🌿 This Christmas, more and more people just like Tania will be counting on Vinnies to provide accommodation support, food hampers, assistance with household bills, and vital medicines.
