May Mobility is taking the road less traveled and it looks like it’s paying off. Most #robotaxi operations start off in urban areas with good driving weather. May Mobility on the other hand has launched its autonomous vehicles in a rural community with extreme winter weather and deep snow. Recently they shared that they have served 10,000 riders, 91% of them repeat customers. The service is a cross between public transport and a traditional ride-hail service. The free service operates in collaboration with the city council, following a fixed route with fixed stops, and is wheelchair accessible. Another use case for autonomous vehicles: forest thinning. Forest thinning is important for keeping fires at bay. Yet, hiring drivers to work machinery in remote sites, drive back and forth on the same route, and in potentially dangerous situations, is getting harder.
