Synthetic fibers like Acrylic contribute to our annual consumption of 11 billion tonnes of fossil fuels…🛢️🌍 🧵What do we know about Acrylic? The lightweight, warm fiber is made from polyacrylonitrile, derived from petrochemicals. To make the fiber, the production process is energy-intensive and releases harmful pollutants into our environment. It is often used as a cheaper alternative to wool and seen across many winter fashion styles due to its ability to retain heat. The soft, and hypoallergenic fiber is commonly used for baby products and by those with wool allergies. 🌍Though it holds benefits in being easy to care for, resistant to moths, and holds its shape, it lacks breathability and its impact on the environment is considerable – not only in production but in the fact it’s not biodegradable. 🔥Every year we consume 11 billion tonnes of fossil fuels, of which crude oil constitutes around 4 billion tonnes. If we carry on with the same population levels and consumption levels of fossil fuels, our known crude oil reserves will have vanished by 2052. The EU has introduced several new regulations to champion and improve sustainability in the fashion industry… 👕 This includes a new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) ♻️ The EPR legislation now means brands are responsible for the entire lifecycle of their products 👉 from design to disposal, ensuring that waste management is built into the business model. 🌿The consumption of textiles has the fourth highest impact on the environment and climate change in Europe, after food, housing, and mobility. 💧Textiles are one of the top three pressures on water and land use, and the top five regarding raw material use and greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. 👥 Employing 1.7 million Europeans, the textiles, clothing, and leather manufacturing sector is a key asset to stimulate local jobs and business opportunities. We’ve set ourselves a goal to replace the most widely produced fiber since the mid-1990s, Polyester. In a time where we’re seeing the impact of our reliance of petro-based fabrics across the globe through global warming and climate change. Our long-term goal as a company, is to use our expertise in material innovation to use proteins to displace petro-based polyester – creating a viable, scalable, polyester replacement. When in conversation with Rachel Cernansky at Vogue Business earlier this year, our CEO and co-founder Simardev Gulati shared our outlook for making this a reality in the near future – "we believe it’s possible to provide fibres that are akin to the most desirable and durable fibres in the world, with no feedstock risk, and be a long-term sustainable cost-competitive solution to the industry.”
