Many materials are made using petroleum, which has numerous downsides. iMicrobes is replacing petroleum with methane, sugar and other renewable feedstock to create the same molecules, but with a net-zero or even negative emissions. 

Industrial Microbes has developed a method, using microbes and a fermentation process, that leverages methane, a greenhouse gas 81 times more potent than carbon dioxide, as a primary feedstock in chemical production. By using methane, they can significantly lower both the cost and emissions associated with chemical manufacturing.

Europe 🇪🇺 was too late catching the AI waves, and most companies that are or will become the next leaders will be in the United States 🇺🇸 and Asia 🇨🇳 

The United States is investing heavily in biotech startups (1.7x more early stage, 1.4x more late stage). The government are adapting regulation to fit new bio-technologies and investing heavily in bio-technology and bio-manufacturing (including a target to manufacture 30% chemicals with biology and a $2 billion stimulus program)
 
Like with AI, we are at risk of missing this next wave of technological innovation where Europe ends up mostly talking about how we might regulate it, instead of having the market leading companies. I spoke about it with Natasha Lomas from TechCrunch 

We need a European Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing strategy. And fast.

I am glad to share that I recently graduated cum laude with a Master's degree in “Molecular Mechanisms of Disease” at Radboud University! 🎉

Over the past two years, I was fortunate to undertake two exciting internships in the fields of chemical biology and biochemistry. 

In my first internship, I joined the lab of Dr. Kim Bonger at the Institute for Molecules and Materials - Radboud University with the guidance of Kevin Venrooij. I had the opportunity to contribute to the development of a class of universal CAR T cells for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and prostate cancer.

I then moved across continents to do my second internship at the lab of Dr. Hidde Ploegh at the Boston Children's Hospital  / Harvard Medical School. With the supervision of Lotte Wijne, we focused on leveraging nanobodies to uncover complex mechanistic roles and explore the translational potential of E2 conjugating enzymes. 

During my academic journey, I had the privilege of meeting incredible friends and doing science with inspiring people from different countries. I am also incredibly grateful for the support and mentorship I've received throughout the program (Dr. Arjan de Brouwer, Dr. Roland Brock, Loes Vaessen, Dr. Helma Pluk, Dr. Annemarie Post).

Now, I am beyond excited to start as a Research Associate for high-throughput experimentation within the bioengineering team at Cradle. I am looking forward to learning more in this role and contributing to the incredible work being done at Cradle.
