After last year's announcement of The ADA Forsyth Institute by Forsyth CEO Dr. Wenyuan Shi and Dr. Raymond Cohlmia , American Dental Association (ADA) Executive Director, #dentech2024 was another inspiring event. They each spoke of their joint vision for innovation and preventive care to improve Oral Health globally. The lead-in keynote address by Dr. Edward J. Zuckerberg, D.D.S.,F.A.G.D. , spoke to the connection between Oral and Systemic Health, the all-important move from surgical to medical and non-invasive treatment, and gave prime examples of advanced techniques that are beginning to make a dramatic impact on patient outcomes through early detection. The panel sessions were relevant and informative with a high level of expertise, including Dr. Natalia Chalmers DDS MHSc PhD , visionary and Chief Dental Officer at Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) leading development and implementation of oral health policy and innovation, Dr. Brett Kessler , incoming ADA President, Dr. Maria Ryan , EVP & Chief Clinical Officer at Colgate-Palmolive , and Dr. Jennifer Webster-Cyriaque, Acting Director National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) , who was also with us at the DOCTRC Regenerative Medicine annual meeting in Bethesda, MD earlier in the week. Comments on the third panel made by Dr. Dominick Zero, DDS, MS, Cariologist and clinical study expert, stood out as those from an authority in the field, saying that after injecting his entire career with passion into early detection and noninvasive treatment of dental caries (the world's most prevalent chronic disease), he is thrilled to finally see these commitments to Oral Health and proposed changes in Dentistry and only wished he was 20 years younger to be able to experience this progress more fully. The fourth and final panel was a testimony to the hard work and efforts by Forsyth, led by Dr. Wen Shi, to make a global impact on Oral Health. Influential leaders from across the world spoke to global innovation and the need for more investment. Sadly, in the US there are few funding opportunities available to startups for clinical studies. VCs take pause due to the lack of reimbursement for detection and preventive care, while SBIR grants don’t allow clinical studies and large dental companies expect to see substantial revenue before they invest. Communication and alignment on vision are an important first step, but unless we commit more funding to preventive products and make dramatic changes to Reimbursement and Regulatory processes in Dentistry, we’re unlikely to see many of these new and exciting preventive technologies cross the “Valley of Death” to drive the much-needed changes to advance Oral Health and improve patient outcomes. Without this type of major commitment to change, it will be TRAGIC for Oral Health globally. This would be highly regrettable given from what we see from both 2023 and 2024 dentech events. MPWRM is one of two national resource centers developed by the The National Institutes of Health ’s DOCTRC (Dental, Oral & Craniofacial Tissue Regeneration Consortium) initiative, funded through NIH’s National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) dental division, focused on translating regenerative dental technologies to the clinical marketplace.
