Created by the Government of Alberta in 2008, Alberta Enterprise Corporation connects Alberta inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs to money, markets and mentors by fostering a venture capital (VC) industry in the province. The corporation manages a fund which, via venture capital partners, invests into technology and innovation companies.

Formed as an independent corporation in 2008, Alberta Enterprise is a key component of the Government of Alberta’s goal of building a more sustainable, diversified technology industry in Alberta, one where home-grown innovation is encouraged and technology entrepreneurs have greater access to venture capital.

Our mission is to promote the development of Alberta’s venture capital (VC) industry. We achieve this by investing in VC funds that finance early stage technology companies and that have a commitment to Alberta – including a full-time presence in the province. We also support Alberta’s VC ecosystem by connecting investors, entrepreneurs, and experienced technology veterans who share our passion for building a bright, innovative Alberta.

In the long term, our activities will help Alberta claim a larger share of the venture capital invested in Canada. We anticipate venture funds will be more active in pursuing investments here with local lead investors and in looking at Alberta-based companies and technologies. Alberta’s investment community will also be better networked within Alberta, across Canada and internationally.

Congratulations on the grand opening of Alexander Tubular, a company started by Alexander First Nation with the support of amongst others our fund PillarFour Capital Partners Inc., and industrial partners like Dow Chemical.

We are excited to publish the AEC 2023 Alberta Technology Deal Flow Study. The Study provides the leading benchmark for measuring the health, growth and composition of the Alberta technology and innovation sector.

Findings depict a growing ecosystem comprised of companies responsive to the changing times. 2,378 companies were identified as of the end of 2023, a 157% increase since 2012. 69% of surveyed companies developing a software solution, more than any year prior. And as Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) applications become household names, Alberta companies are developing these solutions into their product offerings at a rapid pace, shown by a significant increase in the number of companies integrating these technologies from 36% in 2021, to 46% in 2023.

For this year's study, we amended the inclusion criteria and sector classifications to more closely align with venture capital peers. The sectors now align with the Canadian Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (CVCA)'s, allowing easier comparison to the investment figures published in their quarterly Market Reports. Inclusion criteria are focused chiefly on companies whose primary income stream came from the sale of a novel product or service, and that required significant innovation though research and/or development efforts. The inclusion criteria aligns with Start Alberta, who's platform will be adding those identified in The Study, and will continue to track these companies along with newly created ones as time progresses.

In 2012, Accelerate Fund was launched to provide Alberta based technology entrepreneurs with access to capital and mentorship. When we were looking for an individual to take on the role of providing mentorship, we knew from the outset that it should be David. He embodies the spirit of the Alberta entrepreneur and was the inaugural winner of our Rod Charko Service Award in 2014, which honours an individual that has made an outsized contribution to the Alberta technology ecosystem.

In his role as A100 Industry Chairman, David championed countless grassroots initiatives such as the Alberta Female Founders, Funders and Fortifiers (ABF4) events. His vision was integral in growing the Start Alberta Deal Flow Platform and encouraging its adoption among investors and startups in Alberta.

Thank you David for the incredible and invaluable work and unwavering dedication and guidance to Alberta’s technology, startups and VC ecosystem! You have gone over and above, pouring your heart and soul into building the tech ecosystem in Alberta and have been an integral part in the journey for many tech entrepreneurs and investors.
