Rachel Krystopowicz, a spiritual health practitioner at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, supports patients through the emotional and spiritual challenges they encounter along their healthcare journey. Whether it’s a difficult diagnosis, grief or uncertainty about the future, Krystopowicz helps patients express their fears and find meaning in their experiences. “Amid the busyness of hospital life, we offer peaceful moments where patients process their thoughts and feelings about their situations,” says Krystopowicz. “It’s an honour to listen to patients when they feel safe to express their deepest fears and vulnerabilities.” As a spiritual health practitioner, Krystopowicz has extensive training in psycho-spiritual counselling therapy for hospital settings. “We are trained to offer care to people of faith and non-faith backgrounds to help people discover what makes their life meaningful and possibly leading them to find hope in their situation,” she says. Over 40 disciplines make up Allied Health, with 11 of those disciplines represented by Allied Health Professions. This past weekend marked a watershed moment in cancer care in Alberta—as inpatients from the Tom Baker Cancer Centre were transitioned to the newly opened Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre. In this video, staff and patients reflect on the memories, resilience, and hope that have defined their journeys. As we say goodbye to the spaces that held so much healing, there’s excitement and optimism for the new beginnings that await at Arthur Child.

The Glenrose Hospital’s Rehabilitation Centre is home to a huge range of best-in-class technology, and even some Alberta firsts, all to support patients through their rehabilitation journey. Whether it’s stroke recovery or learning to use a new prosthetic, their team of physiotherapists are there for every step, literally. This Allied Health Week, we celebrate the physiotherapists, audiologists, social workers, occupational therapists, and more who change the lives of patients every day. This past Saturday, Nov. 2, inpatients were moved across the Foothills Medical Centre to the newly opened Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre. This move was the final phase of the patient relocation process from the Tom Baker Cancer Centre to the Arthur Child. Because many of these hospitalized patients require close monitoring, every part of the move was carefully planned. This included deciding the order of patient transfers, making sure there was trained staff at each point, transitioning records from the TBCC/FMC to the Arthur Child and ensuring the new facility was fully functional—including nursing care, diagnostic, food, support services, etc. Dr. Don Morris, the head of oncology for both centres, called the process “a choreographed dance” with military precision. With 160 inpatient rooms, more than 90 chemotherapy chairs, increased space for clinical trials, and 12 radiation vaults with three more shelled in for future growth, the Arthur Child is one of the largest comprehensive cancer centres in the world. #ArthurChild #HopeInspiringInnovation

As a speech-language pathologist (SLP) at Foothills Medical Centre, Rina Kollias helps patients recover the fundamental abilities to speak and swallow—skills often lost due to strokes, brain injuries or other acute conditions. Kollias’s split position takes her from acute care—where she assesses swallowing and communication issues at the bedside—to tertiary neuro rehabilitation, where she supports long-term recovery. “I truly enjoy following my patients through their time in the hospital and witnessing their progress as they work towards achieving long-term goals,” Kollias says. In celebration of Allied Health Week, Kollias reflects on the unique skills and perspectives across allied health disciplines. “It’s inspiring to work together toward common goals,” she says. “Together, we can provide the best care for our patients and support their journeys to recovery.” Over 40 disciplines make up allied health, with 11 of those disciplines represented by allied health professions.
